Cultural references[edit]
- The title of the episode is a reference to the American crime drama television series True Detective.
- At Springfield Elementary School, Seymour bores the kids with the 1967 film Doctor Dolittle. Actual footage of this film is used in the episode.
- Martin thinks Anthony Newley's role in the film was one of his worst.
- The songs heard during the film include "Overture", "Doctor Dolittle" and "My Friend the Doctor" from the film's soundtrack.
- The Simpsons have to wear attic clothes when their washing machine broke down:
- Homer wears a Spin Doctors' "Pocket Full of Kryptonite tour" T-shirt.
- Bart's shirt "Gooba Gooba Who?" is a reference to the Ramones song "Pinhead". The end of the song chants the band's well-known slogan, "Gabba Gabba Hey!" (This song was inspired by the 1932 cult classic Freaks. The main characters in the movie chant, "Gooble gobble, we accept her, one of us!").
- The Exit 35 Appliances' banner makes a reference to the business rating website Yelp.
- Homer mentions Stephen Hawking when buying The Hive grill.
- The Pit master appears in the clouds like Mufasa did in The Lion King.
- Master Prison Chef is a parody of the show MasterChef while Side Dish: Impossible is a reference to Dinner: Impossible.
- The Stan Getz Saxophone Polish is named after Stan Getz, the famous tenor saxophonist.
- Lisa mentions watching lots of Sherlock.
- The Raw Barn clerk thinks Lisa might be working for the NSA, Big Pharma or Amazon Prime.
- Clash of Castles is a parody of Clash of Clans.
- The Scrap City dump is the sponsor of the Jewish Hockey League team "Scrap City Scrappers". This team was a real Calgary Jewish Hockey League team sponsored by writer Joel Cohen's scrapyard-owning father Bill Cohen.
- Marge wears a Live Strong bracelet. The Livestrong Foundation was established by professional cyclist Lance Armstrong.
- She also mentions the Tour de France and Armstrong's doping scandal.
- Proud New Yorker Scotty Boom mentions Times Square, the Bronx Zoo and the "Sex and the City walking tour".
- Other New York-related things Scotty and his son Tyler mention are the FDR Drive, the West Side Highway and the New York Knicks.
- Alton Brown treats Scotty as a "Grand Theft Smoker", a pun on Grand Theft Auto.
- The stores at the Springfield Barbecue Festival:
- "Game of Bones" is a parody of Game of Thrones.
- "Monsters of Pork" could be a reference to the band Monsters of Rock.

- Homer's muumuu is seen in the attic. ("King-Size Homer")
- The pit master appears in the clouds after his death just like Bleeding Gums Murphy did. ("'Round Springfield")
- The Monorail is seen in the scrapyard. ("Marge vs. the Monorail")
- Tyler Boom's ringtone is "Hopin' for a Dream" by Sungazer. ("Covercraft")
Goofs[edit]
- When Alton Brown tastes what Marge has cooked on the show, the color of his shirt changes.
- On the sign for the Scrap city, the word "Sponsor" suddenly changes to "Sponser".
- When Nelson spins the Merry-go-round, Lisa was not holding onto it, but she somehow stays on top of it. Normally, a person would've been thrown away from the ride due to momentum.
- Normally, Nelson is shown as a poor kid, but in this episode, he has enough money to afford a tablet.
- It's never stated that Nelson bought it, he's been known to shoplift in the past. ("Marge Be Not Proud")
Trivia[edit]
- Bart and Lisa seemed surprised with CRT TVs on the Scrap city, as if it were the first time they saw one. However, in the early years of the show, they owned a CRT TV, as LED and LCD TVs hadn't been invented yet.
