Seymour Skinner continuity

I know that for a while now, we've all debated about the continuity of "The Principal and the Pauper", and Skinner's identity. When we're able to, I'd really like to arrange a chat to talk about it, as it could end with us making some major changes to articles. --Will k (Talk ~ Contributions) 07:52, 5 October 2011 (EDT)

We'd need to open up a discussion about it. How about the forums? The Solar Dragon 08:24, 5 October 2011 (EDT)
Hmm, well, I guess the forums would be the best place to discuss them, considering with IRC, everyone's not always on, and very rarely all at once. I shall open a thread on it in the forums. --Will k (Talk ~ Contributions) 21:29, 7 October 2011 (EDT)

Simpsons answers?

Hi, i think we should get something like Wikianswers , but for simpsons questions. I think we could get even more visitors and the adress should be something like answers.simpsonswiki.net. FatHomerTalk 13:47, 10 October 2011 (EDT)

I would love something like that. Only problem is, we'd need a special skin designed for it and other unique code just to make it work. It would be incredibly hard and we would need experts to get it working. Not even ShoutWiki have managed something like this and unless they do, we have no hope. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 14:02, 10 October 2011 (EDT)

ShoutWiki

Hello. I'm wondering if you have any news regarding ShoutWiki. They posted an update on their Facebook page around three weeks ago, and nothing has been said since. Do you have any sense when the site might return to full editing? Hopefully soon. Orange Ice 00:32, 11 October 2011 (EDT)

Not sure how much i should be revealing right now but they should be transferring the wikis to the new server right now if we're lucky. ShoutWiki should be up again within the next couple of weeks we hope, although there is no set date yet. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 01:16, 11 October 2011 (EDT)
Thanks the update. The "they should be back within a couple weeks" has me nervous, as they almost always miss their eta's. It'll be lucky if they're back within two months, if they're predicting two weeks.Orange Ice 10:30, 11 October 2011 (EDT)
Well, the ball has been set rolling now and imports may have started by now. Once wikis have been imported, a requests page will be set up to request your wiki to be imported to the new server. This is to allow those who want to leave to leave and for dead wikis to be left behind. The Solar Dragon (Talk - Contribs.) 10:34, 11 October 2011 (EDT)
Okay, thank you for that! So basically, all wikis will be imported, then you have to request for editing to be restored on yours?Orange Ice 10:39, 11 October 2011 (EDT)
No, the main wikis, the staff wikis and staff-run wikis will be imported for now. As well as the wikis requested via other means. A request page will then be opened up on the hub where you can request your wikis to be imported and editing will be restored etc. I think that's how it's gonna work anyway. ☆The Solar Dragon (Talk - Contribs.)☆ 10:44, 11 October 2011 (EDT)
Okay, great. I hope it's back within a week. Orange Ice 10:50, 11 October 2011 (EDT)

Hi. Do you have any news on how the wiki imports are coming, and if their is an eta yet? Thanks. Orange Ice 10:59, 13 October 2011 (EDT)

I should have another update later today :) ☆The Solar Dragon (Talk - Contribs.)☆ 11:13, 13 October 2011 (EDT)
Okay, pretty much the same. Files getting transferred, not sure about actual wikis yet. The Solar Dragon 13:22, 13 October 2011 (EDT)
Thanks, after the wikis are transferred, will editing be unlocked?Orange Ice 13:56, 13 October 2011 (EDT)
Should be :) ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 14:06, 13 October 2011 (EDT)

Is there an eta for wikis being transferred over?Orange Ice 15:56, 13 October 2011 (EDT)

Not yet. No one wants to say yet because every other time they have given an estimated time, they have been wrong, by a few months... The Solar Dragon (Talk - Contribs.) 15:57, 13 October 2011 (EDT)

Great... It'll be lucky if they're back by December, then.Orange Ice 16:03, 13 October 2011 (EDT)

No, something is finally happening so hopefully a week or two. :D The Solar Dragon 16:03, 13 October 2011 (EDT)

Hopefully... Still, its a bit pathetic that it has taken four months to move servers.Orange Ice 16:13, 13 October 2011 (EDT)

Well, you have to remember that the techs are all volunteers, as are the community staff. No one gets paid. The Solar Dragon (Talk - Contribs.) 16:18, 13 October 2011 (EDT)
...still, four months is an incredibly long time to move servers.Orange Ice 16:25, 13 October 2011 (EDT)
I know, but the techs have also had real life issues to deal with. Skizzerz has been having exams, and I know he is still having them at this time so he's juggling around working for his exams and ShoutWiki. Misza seems to have been very busy too, as have the other techs who were needed throughout this. Solar Dragon (Talk Contribs.) 16:28, 13 October 2011 (EDT)
Thanks. My biggest concern is the reliability of ShoutWiki. Will the site be gone in a year or two is always at the back of my mind.Orange Ice 16:34, 13 October 2011 (EDT)
Well, the new server should be more reliable than the old one and is being looked after my our techs, not some Polish server managers. Plus, ShoutWiki plans on sticking around. We don't plan on going anywhere. We've just had a bad start to life, that's all. The Solar Dragon 16:37, 13 October 2011 (EDT)
I definitely think that ShoutWiki has the potential to be better than Wikia if they're able to keep the site up. More skins, more cool features (unlike the stupid ones wikia crams down peoples throats), and better customer service.Orange Ice 16:45, 13 October 2011 (EDT)
Yes, I saw the potential in them too, hence the reason we moved Wikisimpsons there in the first place. Still, I'm glad we got out of there before the massive crash. Still, once ShoutWiki is up again, we'll try and become better than Wikia. We already are better, except from the fact Wikia has more wikis and more users. Hopefully, once they drive all their users away, they'll come to ShoutWiki. :) Solar Dragon (Talk Contribs.) 16:49, 13 October 2011 (EDT)
Last question: Will a backup server be implemented once the main one is up? This would help protect against another massive crash.Orange Ice 16:55, 13 October 2011 (EDT)
We won't have a backup server just yet, we will, however, have a backup script running either weekly or daily to backup the information. We're planning on getting a backup server at some point, it's just costs at the moment. The Solar Dragon 17:03, 13 October 2011 (EDT)

Will monaco be free for the days lost?Orange Ice 11:29, 14 October 2011 (EDT)

Got the answer "probably". SolarDragonName.png (Talk - Contribs.) 11:47, 14 October 2011 (EDT)

Good. In fact, I think they should make it free for good, as a "thank you" to the users that stick with them after all this downtime.Orange Ice 11:54, 14 October 2011 (EDT)

Not too sure about that but I certainly wouldn't complain if that happened. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 12:00, 14 October 2011 (EDT)

Hi again. Considering the weekend is almost over, is there any new news to report? Have the wiki transfers begun yet, or more of the same? Thanks.Orange Ice 17:56, 16 October 2011 (EDT)

More of the same. Once anything changes, I'll leave a message here. The Solar Dragon 17:57, 16 October 2011 (EDT)

Ok.. It's been three days. I'm starting to get very fed up at how long this file transfer is taking. It'll be a miracle of the sites back before December.Orange Ice 22:58, 18 October 2011 (EDT)

As much as I think and KNOW they're amazing staff as well as people, how would you cope with that much? Hmm? Touché, good sir. --Will k (Talk ~ Contributions) 01:32, 19 October 2011 (EDT)

Basically, you can either have ShoutWiki up quickly, and it will probably come offline again due to bugs. Or, you could have it up slowly so that staff can check everything over for bugs. There is a lot of data to transfer you know. A wiki host is a lot larger than a website so it takes a lot longer. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 02:09, 19 October 2011 (EDT)
I agree that it is good to check things over for bugs, but seriously this has been going on for an incredibly long time, and there appears to be no end in sight. :(Orange Ice 17:33, 19 October 2011 (EDT)
We should hopefully know more by the end of the weekend. The Solar Dragon (Talk - Contribs.) 17:37, 19 October 2011 (EDT)
Good to hear. Btw, this wiki is excellent! Only 35 articles away from hitting 10,000!Orange Ice 17:41, 19 October 2011 (EDT)
I know, that's going to drop though. We need to move articles to the merchandise wiki still. The Solar Dragon (Talk - Contribs.) 17:43, 19 October 2011 (EDT)

What's the latest?Orange Ice 10:07, 23 October 2011 (EDT)

The techs are getting close to completion. That's all I can tell you for now. Solar Dragon (Talk Contribs.) 10:09, 23 October 2011 (EDT)
Great! Iit should be back up very soon then?Orange Ice 10:24, 23 October 2011 (EDT)
Hopefully. I can't tell you an exact date though. SolarDragonName.png (Talk - Contribs.) 10:31, 23 October 2011 (EDT)

I hope that ShoutWiki is able to recover from these two major outages this year. And hopefully they've researched their new host carefully, and pit other precautions in place so something like these outages never happen again.Orange Ice 10:48, 23 October 2011 (EDT)

Hi, Solar, is there any more updates since the end of October? Phinbart - just one of the huge Bart fans! 13:57, 1 November 2011 (EDT)
Yes, they're getting DNS errors at the moment and are trying to fix these. Also, why don't you come on IRC any more? The Solar Dragon (Talk - Contribs.) 14:25, 1 November 2011 (EDT)
I do come on IRC, although not that often now because of school. And, have the ShoutWiki staff got an aimed date on when it will be back up? Phinbart - just one of the huge Bart fans! 14:35, 1 November 2011 (EDT)

I'm leaving shoutwiki. Five months of downtime is crazy.Orange Ice 11:34, 11 November 2011 (EST)

I know how you feel. However, what's the best alternative though? Wikkii? TropicalWikis? All are even worse in Google rankings than ShoutWiki. Once ShoutWiki is back up, think of it as a new wiki host I guess. A new, great wiki host. One that shouldn't break again. ☆The Solar Dragon (Talk - Contribs.)☆ 12:38, 11 November 2011 (EST)
Well, so many wikis have left, and it'll take ages to build back up.Orange Ice 12:43, 11 November 2011 (EST)
Believe me, moving again to another wiki host will not be worth it. You will have less search results, less possible editors and you will struggle more than if you were to just stick through the down time and carry on from where you left off. The Solar Dragon (Talk - Contribs.) 12:49, 11 November 2011 (EST)
I may return to Wikia. Their support is poor, and new features are worse. But they have a super high search ranking, and very reliable servers. Plus, they have the best chance of lasting.Orange Ice 12:53, 11 November 2011 (EST)
I should point out that which Wiki host you use has nothing to do with search rankings. Google judges a website based on content, uptime, age, and speed. The only reason Wikia sites tend to be near the top of search results is because they have a lot of content, have been around for a while, and have the resources to pay for fast servers with very little downtime. As Solar Dragon said, waiting for ShoutWiki to get their new servers will be worth the wait. --Jake 09:36, 13 November 2011 (EST)
It's not just about search rankings. ShoutWiki has been very unreliable, with two huge crashes, this one worse than the last (didn't think that possible) poor communication during the downtime, estimates that are always missed, some up to two months. At this point, they seem to be the least reliable of the wikifarms.--Orange Ice 10:41, 14 November 2011 (EST)
Any updates? Phinbart - just one of the huge Bart fans! 13:38, 15 November 2011 (EST)
No. ☆The Solar Dragon (Talk - Contribs.)☆ 13:56, 15 November 2011 (EST)

<Skizzerz> got DNS to work finally, so we're working now on bringing back our auxiliary services (blog, irc, etc.) and some other testing with the wikis themselves (such as making sure that the backup system is working properly). We're currently looking for a Christmas launch, although it may be sooner The Solar Dragon 06:01, 24 November 2011 (EST)

Special thanks and quick question?

Thanks Solar Dragon, thanks for taking the appearances away. To my question because Eric Idle is English wouldn't it be 29 March 1943 instead of March 29, 1943 on the Infobox? Mr. Ifans (Talk) 16 October 2011

No, we use American format here since The Simpsons is an American show. Therefore, we use American spellings and date formats. SolarDragonName.png (Talk - Contribs.) 05:12, 16 October 2011 (EDT)
Mostly. Because of my deep British roots, I tend to type "theatre" without thinking. :-) But seriously, we do keep to American usage. -- Mythigator 14:03, 16 October 2011 (EDT)

Okay then. Since you're both interested, I would like you both to explain why you think you're the most suitable candidate then please. SolarDragonName.png (Talk - Contribs.) 14:30, 7 December 2011 (EST)

I'm also interested, but ditto Myth. --Will (talk) 00:28, 8 December 2011 (EST)

Well then, same goes for you. Explain why you think you're the most suitable candidate. Solar Dragon (Talk Contribs.) 03:39, 8 December 2011 (EST)

Okay, here's my position: In your notice looking for someone to assume the rep duties, you said that you have a tendency to get annoyed and lose your cool (which tends to adversely impact dealings with other people/websites). That implies that you are looking for someone who is able to keep a cool head and not get offended as easily. I've got that covered, I think. In my working with the wiki I've gone to great lengths to avoid "pulling rank" based on age, but in stating the need for someone with a cooler head to represent the wiki, I think you've uncovered a situation where an older head may be the better one for the job. I'm sure you've heard the saying, "Don't sweat the small stuff." A follow-up to that is that there are some things worth sweating and some that are better to let slide, and in some situations, in order to know the difference, it REALLY helps if you've been around the block a few more times. (BTW, "been around the block" is a USA expression for being older or more experienced—it has nothing to do with the UK expression "round the bend"! LOL ...)

Also, as my wiki contributions can attest, I've had enough experience with writing that I've gotten pretty good at writing diplomatically and, if necessary, schmoozing via the written word. The latter isn't a skill I'm particularly proud of, but it is useful sometimes.

I'm speaking to what you wrote in the announcement, but there may well be things you're looking for in a site representative that just haven't come to your attention yet. On that basis and as said previously, I'll take no offense at all if you decide that Will or Cook would be a more suitable rep.

Finally, I'm not after power or prestige in tossing my hat into the ring. The situation is that you've uncovered an issue where you need help, and I'd like to help, if I may. That's my $.02 worth. -- Mythigator 09:07, 8 December 2011 (EST)

So, I'm probably not the best bloke for the job, but neither is Homer as a nuclear safety inspector. OK, I won't spam your page with the same message as Myth, but I'll sum up why I'd like the position:

You've seen me on IRC, and I rarely lose my cool. If the person or people in question were being so stupid that I'd overreact, they wouldn't be worth affiliating with, talking to, etc; Like Myth, I know your general wiki back to front, if that was ever needed. Also, you may remember, I helped affiliate with Springfield Punx, though not very large a job, helped get the word out just that bit more about Wikisimpsons.

So sure, my points aren't convincing, but in-depth, they mean quite a lot. Whether you choose me, Myth, Cook, or Turanga Leela, it doesn't matter as long as the right one is chosen. --Will (talk) 05:42, 10 December 2011 (EST)

As i really really really really gotta go, I'll make this short and sweet. You know my abilities and experience and I think a great example would be my working with Simpsons Wikia on getting rid of copied content. Now I gotta go, and I look forward to seeing who gets the role when I return from Wales.--Cook879 17:23, 11 December 2011 (EST)
