- Lionel Hutz references Webster's Dictionary.
- The second segment is a parody of the Twilight Zone episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet", set on a bus rather than an airplane.
- Mr. Burns is Count Dracula: more specifically, Bram Stroker’s Dracula.
- In the ending scene, Milhouse-Schroeder is playing the piano, while Santa's Little Helper-Linus is dancing to the music, a reference to Peanuts.

- This is one of several Simpsons episodes which are considered anthology episodes that features mini-stories.
- Richard Nixon says "I'm not dead" (protesting being summoned to serve on the Devil's jury) in this episode, but he would die 6 months later.
