Trivia
Cultural references
- The title is taken from the musical On a Clear Day You Can See Forever.
- The episode's couch gag (which shows the house, Springfield, the continent, the planet, the Milky Way, and the universe, and finally goes back to Homer's body) spoofs the 1977 science education movie Powers of Ten. The gag was first used in "The Ziff Who Came to Dinner."
- Sprawl-Mart is a parody of Wal-Mart, in spite of the sign outside that says it isn't.
- In one scene, a sign outside Sprawl-Mart says "Don't Watch 60 Minutes This Week," a reference to controversies involving Wal-Mart ending up being covered on 60 Minutes.
- The title of the restraining order instructional video, Get Out of My Dreams and Also Out of My Car: A Guide to Your Restraining Order, is a pun on the song "Get Out of My Dreams, Get into My Car" by Billy Ocean.
- Songs/music used:
- The song playing during the "Lisa poking Bart" montage is "Don't Stand So Close to Me" by The Police.
- When Bart drops his pants to pee outdoors ("The world is my toilet now!"), the music playing is the theme from Born Free.
- During the montage showing Bart living with a pack of wild dogs, the music playing is from Vivaldi's The Four Seasons.
- At the very end, while the wicker statue burns, the Simpsons play (and dance to) "Tijuana Taxi" by Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass.
- The wicker statue of Lisa that Bart builds is a reference to the 1973 film The Wicker Man. The 2006 remake came out about ten months after the episode first aired.
- Jimbo calls the Lisa statue "The Wicker Witch of the West," referencing both The Wicker Man and The Wizard of Oz.
- Bart's plea to Lisa to "Look in your heart" is a reference to the 1990 Coen Brothers film Miller's Crossing.
Goofs
- Samantha Stanky from "Bart's Friend Falls in Love" is clearly visible in the field trip; however in the episode she first appeared in, she was sent to a girls-only school.
- Uter is clearly visible in the field trip to Springfield Glacier; however, he was left behind on an earlier field trip in the episode "The PTA Disbands" (the 21st episode from the 6th season). In the episode "24 Minutes," he is seen stuck in a cobweb in the school air vents. In yet another episode, he is dead.
- Not really a goof. It's not that improbable for Uter to have made his way back home after being left behind on the previous field trip. Also, the other two situations mentioned (the cobweb in "24 Minutes" and being dead, presumably in the "Nightmare Cafeteria" segment of "Treehouse of Horror V") occur in non-canon episodes.
