Cultural references
- The episode title is a pun on the comic strip and movie Dennis the Menace.
- In the shower, Homer is shrieking to the tune of the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb". Soon after, Homer also screams to the tune of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5.
- The movement "Sabre Dance" composed by Aram Khachaturian is heard when Jasper is doing his act at the talent show.
- Abe sings Tom Jones' famous single "What's New Pussycat?" at the talent show.
- The funeral home has a banner with "Sales from the Crypt" on it, which is a reference to Tales from the Crypt comic books.
- Bart mentions the term Dead Man's Curve when he is in a coffin pretending to be driving a car.
- Homer confused tennis with Foxy boxing.
- Marge heard that Mel Brooks had a tennis court in his house.
- The people Homer considers "sports lovable clowns" include: baseball player John Rocker, American footballer O. J. Simpson and Dorf. Dorf is the main character in a series of films during the 1980s and 1990s, with each film focused on a particular sport, with Dorf humorously giving instructions on the history and play of the sport.
- Lou defines Homer-Marge doubles tennis as "the LA Clippers of backyard tennis". This is a reference to the Lakers–Clippers rivalry, with some people contending that the term rivalry is inaccurate due to the Lakers' historical success and the Clippers' historical lack thereof.
- Lisa makes a reference to Oedipus when she is providing Homer therapy.
- Part of the dialogue when Lisa acts as Homer's therapist parodies a scene in Mommie Dearest, specifically the scene where Mrs. Chadwick (Priscilla Pointer) says "I think you're overreacting, Miss Crawford", and Joan Crawford (Faye Dunaway) replies "And I think you're underreacting, Mrs. Chadwick".
- When Andre Agassi introduces himself at the tennis match, Homer asks, "The wrestler?", confusing Agassi for professional wrestler André the Giant.
- Pete Sampras has to participate in a Ho Hos cakes commercial.
Goofs
- Homer mistook tennis for foxy boxing, but didn't know what it was called. He referred to it as "the sport where the chicks whale on each other." Previously, however, in "Lisa on Ice", Homer knew the name of the "sport."
- However, given Homer's mental capacity, he could have easily forgotten.
- In the first shown match at the Krusty Kharity Klassic, three groups of two men run into each other's heads from the opposite sides of the tennis court. The second and third groups, which come running in from outside the scene, are exactly identical.
