"The Telltale Head" was the eighth episode of Season 1. It aired on February 25, 1990. The episode was written Al Jean, Mike Reiss, Sam Simon and Matt Groening. Rich Moore directed it. This is the first episode of the series in which Sideshow Bob, Reverend Timothy Lovejoy, Krusty the Clown, Jimbo Jones, Kearney Zzyzwicz, Dolph Starbeam, Ms. Albright, and Apu Nahasapeemapetilon appear.

Bart cuts off Jebediah Springfield's statue's head to be cool at some bullies, but the whole city gets angry and starts looking for the vandal.

Plot

Homer and Bart walk carrying Jebediah Springfield's statue's head and an angry mob suddenly starts to chase through the streets. Someone had sawn off the head of the statue of Jebediah Springfield and the people think Homer and Bart did it. Surrounded by the surly crowd Bart pleads for understanding and relates the events of the previous day.

As the story unfolds, The Simpsons go to the church, but Bart and Homer get distracted (Homer listens to a football match while listening to Reverend Lovejoy). When they go back home, Bart borrows $5.00 from Homer and sneaks away to see Space Mutants IV at the local movie theater. On his way, he runs into a gang of troublemakers. One of them, Jimbo, invites Bart to sneak into the movies with him and his buddies. They are later thrown out from the the cinema. They then go to the Kwik-E-Mart to steal some stuff, lay on the grass to watch the sacring shape of the clouds and throw rocks at Jebediah's statue. Jimbo wishes someone would cut off the statue's head. When Bart tries to defend the town's hero, Jimbo and the boys laugh at him. Bart asks Homer if popularity is good. Homer says it is the most important thing. To be cool, Bart sneaks out of the house that night and saws the statue's head off.

The next day, all of Springfield grieves the decapitation of the town founder. Bart hides the head inside his backpack and goes for Jimbo and his pals, only to discover they are as distraught as everyone else and never meant what they said. Everyone cries while looking at the headless statue, the barflies of Moe's are sadder than ever and even Krusty the Clown tells kids to tell him who is the blame. Bart starts to listen to the head talking to him. He buries the head in his garden. However, feeling remorse, he later returns home and confesses to his family. Saying he won't let his son take the blame alone, Homer escorts Bart to the authorities. They are then confronted by the angry mob. That is how the story ends and Bart tells the crowd that his act has united the town and taught people to appreciate their heritage. The townspeople agree, and Bart is forgiven as he puts the head back to the body.
