Cultural references

After reading the TV Guide, Homer imagines an scene from the situation comedy Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.
  • On the TV Guide, Homer reads "Gomer upsets Sergeant Carter". This is a reference to the American situation comedy Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. in which Sergeant Carter is always exasperated by Gomer Pyle's ineptitude. "Shazam!" is one of Gomer's typical catchphrases.
  • Ex US president Jimmy Carter is playing the sax with the kids in the neighborhood.
  • Mr. Cleanser is a parody of Mr. Clean, the mascot of the surface cleaner brand.
