Synopsis[edit]
- "After a confrontation with the Sanitation Commissioner, Homer decides to run against him in the next election. Homer's campaign, based on outlandish promises and elaborate services that the garbage men will perform, wins him the election. But being in charge of Springfield's sanitation turns out to be a bit more challenging than Homer anticipates."
Plot[edit]
The executives of Costingtons department store invent a new holiday to improve summer sales called "Love Day," combining the colorful, heart-themed aesthetic of Valentine's Day with the commercial gift-buying spirit of Christmas. After the Simpsons celebrate Love Day, trash begins to pile up, but the family refuses to take it out until it overflows. Homer eventually causes the trash to spill. When Homer is forced to take out the garbage, the garbage truck passes by the house. Homer insults the garbage men, and because he refuses to apologize, the Simpsons' trash service is cut off. Garbage piles up in their front yard until one day Homer wakes up to find it all gone. Homer thinks he has won until he learns that Marge wrote an apology letter to the sanitation commissioner, forging Homer's name. Angry, Homer visits the sanitation commissioner, Ray Patterson (voiced by Steve Martin), to retrieve the letter. Ray politely returns it, but after a brief, pointless argument, Homer decides to run for sanitation commissioner to spite Patterson.
Homer's campaign initially struggles. Taking Moe's advice, Homer adopts the slogan "Can't Someone Else Do It?" and convinces the town that voting for him would bring benefits like round-the-clock trash pickup and emergency cleanup services. Homer wins the election in a landslide and immediately begins implementing his ideas. However, after only a month, the sanitation department goes bankrupt due to the costs of Homer's "crazy promises." To fund the department, Homer allows other cities to dump their garbage under Springfield for a fee. This quickly backfires as trash starts to surface and flood Springfield. Homer is publicly horsewhipped and removed from office. The town approaches Ray Patterson to return, but he declines, amused, and leaves the town to deal with its mess, essentially saying, "I told you so." With no other options, Mayor Quimby moves the entire town five miles down the road by trucking all the houses and buildings to a new location.
Production[edit]
Reception[edit]
Director Jim Reardon won a 1998 Annie Award in Outstanding Individual Achievement for Directing in an Animated Television Production for "Trash of the Titans".[1] The episode also won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program in the 50th Primetime Emmy Awards.[2]
