The short will air on July 13, 2012 onwards in the USA (though could be seen in some countries since June 25) before Ice Age: Continental Drift in theaters in USA. A 2D animatic version will be screened at San Diego Comic-Con International during July 2012.[1]

Summary

Maggie returns to the Ayn Rand School for Tots where her only friend there is a butterfly. Each baby is put through a security gate and when Maggie goes through, it says "Nothing Special". Maggie is then put in an area of the daycare that isn't great. Baby Gerald, Maggie's arch-nemesis, will make an appearance.[1]

Plot

When Marge brings Maggie to Ayn Rand School for Tots to get babysat, Maggie starts to miss her mother. When she is there she is put through a security gate and is placed in the category "Nothing Special" instead of "Gifted Children". Maggie, Baby Gerald, and an unnamed child are the only children in the category. Gerald, bored, starts to smash two butterflies which upsets Maggie. Maggie finds a larvae and uses that as her eyebrow so Gerald would not kill that too. Maggie then read a book about butterflies and found out that they form from a pupa. Maggie started to protect a pupa which lead to Gerald hunting Maggie around the daycare center. The pupa hatches and Maggie tried to throw it out of the window but Gerald managed to kill it by drawing down the blinds when it is at the window. Maggie is sad, meanwhile Marge comes to pick up Maggie. Gerald is still at the center and draws up the blinds and discover that the butterfly he killed with the blind was Maggie's rosette. Maggie is in Marge's car and her rosette starts to fly away out of the car window and it turns out that it was the butterfly and Maggie is happy.

Production

The producers decided to focus the short on Maggie as it is hard to make a 20 minute Maggie episode, but easy to make a 4-5 minute short. James Brooks came up with the idea of doing a short, similar to the Pixar shorts. The short is dialogue-free.[1]

On May 24, 2012, David Silverman's Twitter account posted a drawing from the short featuring Maggie.[2]
