Opening sequence[edit]

The opening sequence parodies the Street Fighter video game series. La Muerte and Xibalba, characters from The Book of Life, appear on a fight

• A modified version of Jarabe Tapatío (the "Mexican hat dance") is heard throughout the opening.
• Otto has the number "666" on his hat, the number of the beast.
• La Muerte and Xibalba from Jorge R. Gutierrez's 2014 animated film The Book of Life appear as fighters.
  • Such as in The Book of Life, the opening sequence combines elements from Mexico and the Day of the Dead, celebrated at the beginning of November in many communities in the United States.
• Los Simpsons Fighter! is a parody of the Street Fighter series.
  • Parodies of Zangief, Dhalsim, and Blanka are seen.
  • La Muerte activates a special attack based on Chun Li's Spinning Bird Kick.

The Information Rage[edit]

• The segment is in the style of the film Pacific Rim and is based on the ongoing political polarization in the United States between the Democratic and Republican parties.
• Mayor Quimby asks the people of Springfield to not turn their indecisiveness into another Big Gulp riot, referencing the line of fountain drinks owned by 7-Eleven.

Signs in favor and against Lisa's progressive idea reference things like the Coexist image, ELO's "Don't Bring Me Down" and the Back to the Future logo

• The signs placed in gardens include:
  • "Women's lights are human lights", a pun on "Women's rights are human rights", a phrase used in the feminist movement.
  • The sign that says "LED Me to the Future" is a reference to the Back to the Future logo.
  • "This is an LED light district" refers to the Red-light district.
  • The "Coexist" made with different types of lamps is a parody of the Coexist image, designed to represent tolerance between religions.
  • The sign "Don't Turn Me Down" has a bulb with its filaments describing the word "ELO". This is a reference to the Electric Light Orchestra's (ELO) famous 1979 song "Don't Bring Me Down".
• Tox News is a parody of Fox News, with "Tox" an abbreviation of "toxic." The host is a parody of Tucker Carlson.
• The Tox News anchor asks if Democrats would go after the mascot of Mrs. Butterworth's, Mrs. Butterworth's "ample bosom".
• MSNPR is a parody of MSNBC and NPR. The host appears to be a parody of Rachel Maddow.
• The Red Monster destroys a Mail-In Ballots processing building, a reference to Donald Trump's lies of a stolen election, and a Center for Disease Control building, referencing anti-vaccination beliefs and mask opposition among many right-wing Americans.
• The Red Monster attacks the Blue Monster with Tim Allen DVDs, a reference to Tim Allen's political views.
• Other monsters hint the social media use in politics, including:
  • Four Chan Saurus is a reference to 4chan.
  • Facebookzilla is a reference to Facebook and Godzilla.
  • Mecha-Reddit is a reference to Reddit and Mechagodzilla.
  • Ro-gan is a reference to Joe Rogan and his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, and to Rodan.

The Fall of the House of Monty[edit]

• The segment title is a reference to short story The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe.
• In the opening of the segment "Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565" by Johann Sebastian Bach plays.
• Cod Liver Absinthe is a reference to cod liver oil and absinthe.
• Mr. Burns runs into a secret room with a polygonal shape and two paintings. Both the room and the paintings parody one of the halls in the queue line from the attraction The Haunted Mansion, which is located in three different Disney Parks.
• The future Homer is seen drinking from a Big Slurp cup, a reference to Big Gulp.

• The segment is a parody of the film Venom, with Denim being a parody of Venom.
• During the dance sequence, several different songs play:
  • "Soldier of Dance", composed by Mike Morasky, from Team Fortress 2.
  • "Rockit" by Herbie Hancock.
  • "After You've Gone" by Turner Layton.
• Comic Book Guy is seen with a Big Slurp cup, a reference to Big Gulp.
• Denim asks Homer if he has stopped following Marge on Facebook.
