• When Marge turns on the radio, the song playing is "Sixteen Tons" by Tennessee Ernie Ford.

After reading the TV Guide, Homer imagines an scene from the situation comedy Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.

• On the TV Guide, Homer reads "Gomer upsets Sergeant Carter". This is a reference to the American situation comedy Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. in which Sergeant Carter is always exasperated by Gomer Pyle's ineptitude. "Shazam!" is one of Gomer's typical catchphrases.
• Ex US president Jimmy Carter is playing the sax with the kids in the neighborhood.
• Mr. Cleanser is a parody of Mr. Clean, the mascot of the surface cleaner brand.
• Bart scrubs the painting American Gothic by Grant Wood.
• The fact of Bart demanding the elephant instead of the money is similar to an incident that happened in the game show The Price Is Right. In 1956 a contestant demanded a real elephant he had won instead of a 4,000 dollars prize. The show producers finally got him an elephant from Kenya.

• The ivory dealer Mr. Blackheart is a reference to the film White Hunter Black Heart in which a movie director desires to hunt down an animal in Africa.

• A song like the opening theme from the 1954 TV series Lassie is heard when Bart goes out to find Stampy.
• The Springfield Tar Pits are a nod to the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles.
• When Homer accidentally drives into a deer statue, Homer responds with "D'oh!", quickly followed by "A deer!" by Lisa and "A female deer!" by Marge. This is a reference to the lyrics Doe, a deer, a female deer in the song "Do-Re-Mi" from The Sound of Music.
