Cultural references[edit]
- This episode title is a pun on the comic strip Little Orphan Annie and Milhouse's name.
- The "Bridal Chorus" plays during Luann and Kirk's wedding.
- According to Bart, all of Homer's bedroom stories contain The Container Store commercials.
- "Adagio for Strings" is played during the "dark and gloomy" scene showing the coastguards driving toward the Simpson's house. "Adagio for Strings" was also used for the main theme in Oliver Stone's anti-war movie Platoon. The scene itself is a parody of a scene from Saving Private Ryan, where Mrs. Ryan is informed of the death of her sons.
- Homer unintentionally mentions water-related things when he tries to cheer up Milhouse, including Ocean Spray cranberry juice, Cap'n Crunch cereal, Seven Seas Italian salad dressing, Chicken of the Sea tunar, a Billy Ocean CD and The History of Atlantic Records. Homer also mentions Anchor Steam beer brand.
- Milhouse's Danish uncle Norbert Van Houten is an obvious parody of Indiana Jones. He lives in Solvang, California, which is considered to be the "Danish Capital of America".
- The addresses in Solvang Bart needs to call are:
- Butter cookie 8-2147. Butter cookies, also known as Danish biscuits, are originally from Denmark.
- Hans Christian Andersen 5-5166, a reference to the Danish author.
- Aquavit 3-2599, a reference to the Scandinavian distilled beverage Akvavit.
- The Swedish Rhapsody No. 1 by Hugo Alfvén is heard when the Solvang Air plane lands at Springfield Airport and during the start of the credits.
- The lyrics "You're the Wilma to my Fred" in Homer's song "Beautiful Eyes" is a reference to another animated sitcom, The Flintstones.
- Part of "The Raiders March" from the Indiana Jones film, Raiders of the Lost Ark is played when Uncle Norbert flies Milhouse home in his biplane.
