Day of the Nerd is a Simpsons Comics story first printed in Simpsons Comics #73.

Synopsis[edit]

Magazine publisher and film director Cornelius Morgan holds a contest to find out who the biggest nerd in Springfield is so he can leave them his entire collection of nerdy paraphernalia.

Plot[edit]

At Springfield Elementary School, Principal Skinner announces that the school is raising money by having the children sell chocolate to the public, with the student who sells the most getting their permanent record incinerated. Bart decides to start at Richdale selling chocolate, while Lisa goes home to watch footage of the new Mars rover. She watches the footage with Homer and becomes excited at the prospect of going to space one day herself. Meanwhile, Bart gets to work selling chocolate. He arrives at the House of Sci-Fi-Mystery and is let in. Cornelius Morgan introduces himself to Bart, saying that he's the publisher of Distinguished Monster Monthly and the director of the 1967 Radioactive Man film.

Meanwhile, Homer and Lisa drive to Shelbyville to sell chocolate, as everybody in Springfield had already bought chocolate from other kids. Homer goes off-road in the desert and crashes into what looks like the Mars rover. They realize that they're on a film set faking the Mars rover, with Dr. Babcock of NASA in charge. Back at Cornelius' house, Cornelius reveals to Bart that he's going to get cryogenically frozen, so he wants to leave his collection of nerdy paraphernalia to someone. Bart suggests that he hold a contest to find the biggest nerd in Springfield, which he likes the idea of. Soon after, all the nerds in Springfield hear about the contest and get started on trying to win.

Back in the desert, Lisa becomes angry at Dr. Babcock for faking the footage. A woman explains to Lisa that so many space missions fail, so they need to record fake footage to keep people happy. Lisa tells her that the people deserve to know the truth, and Homer and Lisa drive away. Back at the Simpson house, Bart has already given up selling chocolate to people. Meanwhile, across town, the nerds are working on winning the contest. The Superfriends decide to go on a Dungeons & Dragons-style quest, with the Squeaky-Voiced Teen sending them to take a tire to the Springfield Tire Yard. Comic Book Guy decides to live his life as if it were a Japanese anime, dressing himself and his cat, Comicachu, as anime characters. Professor Frink invents The Mononizer, which condenses sci-fi trilogies into one installment, and Benjamin, Doug, and Gary, create a real-life Internet search engine. Back at home, Lisa talks to Marge about the importance of telling the truth. As the Superfriends get closer to their goal with the tire, the bullies attack them. During the chaos, Professor Frink accidentally hits them with The Mononizer.

The next day, the news shows new footage of the Mars rover, only for the camera to show writing saying "Homer Rules!" in the dirt, revealing the truth to the viewers. Later, Cornelius gets ready to announce the contest winner to the nerds of Springfield. He reveals that the winner is himself and that the contest was all part of a mockumentary film, Nerdtown U.S.A., that he was making with Kent Brockman. Two nerds had created a robot armed with missiles, and when another nerd hits the robot out of anger, the robot activates and fires the missiles into Cornelius' house, destroying it. The nerds of Springfield start gathering up the remains of his collection for themselves. That night, Marge and Lisa talk about space and how Marge wanted to be an astronaut when she was a child, and she thinks Lisa could actually do it. Meanwhile, the nerds are still gathering up anything nerdy they find from Cornelius' collection.
