Plot

At church, Reverend Lovejoy announces that the Parson will be coming to town. Ned Flanders faints, and Homer leaves to go get "Smelling Salts". The parson arrives and informs the Reverend that, for a period of 3 months, Reverend Lovejoy was not an official minister, due to a bureaucratical error, and all official things he did during this time are were invalid.

When Homer and Marge’s marriage turns out to be invalid because Reverend Lovejoy was not licensed at the time, Homer asks Marge to marry him again. Marge takes over as the wedding planner, becoming more and more irratable and lashing out at Homer for whatever he does (demanding non existant blue roses, saying she wants a lemon frosted cake when she told Homer he could pick the frosting, and yelling at him when he let Lenny and Carl come). When Homer mysteriously disappears on their wedding day, Bart and Lisa search for answers and are led on a cryptic trail of clues, leading them to Sideshow Bob (Kelsey Grammer). Meanwhile, Homer finds himself chained to a pipe in a dark room. When a mysterious voice tells him that the key to unlock his chains is inside a lollipop, he frantically eats it only to discover the lollipop is made of fiery hot sauce and he is tormented as Bart and Lisa race to save him. It turns out that his kidnappers are Patty and Selma, using a voice modulator, who plan to keep Homer cooped up until Marge forgets about him. However, they later release him after they hear the vows Homer was going to say to Marge. But afterwards, Bart and Lisa trace them and threaten to tell Marge unless they pay for their parent's remarriage ceremony.

Trivia

  • This is the first episode that Sideshow Bob was both the main focus and yet not the main antagonist behind the events of said episode since Brother from Another Series. Instead, Patty and Selma are the antagonists, this time. (Ironically, one of them was a previous target of Bob.)
  • Sideshow Bob seems to have ditched his family and turned good but he will return in Season 21 again.
  • It's implied in this episode that Homer's trademark line of "Why you little...!" when about to strangle Bart, when done fully, is "Why you little Bastard!".
  • This episode marks the first time ever Patty and Selma Bouvier as the episode`s main antagonist also the first time they did something very hurtful to Marge Simpson (Ruin the re-marriage & kidnap Homer)
  • On June 28, 2009 a couple days after the death of Michael Jackson, this episode was dedicated to Michael Jackson with a picture of Leon Kompowsky from Stark Raving Dad.
  • This episode was rated TV 14 DLSV.
