• Homer's fantasy football team is called "Somewhere Over the Dwayne Bowe". This is a reference to the song "Over the Rainbow" (from The Wizard of Oz) and to Dwayne Bowe

  • James L. Boots, a reference to James L. Brooks
  • Leg O'Las, a reference to Legolas from The Lord of the Rings
  • C.F.L. Player, a reference to the Canadian Football League

• Captain Bowditch's name is a reference to Nathaniel Bowditch, who wrote Bowditch's American Practical Navigator.
