On Father's Day, Homer is impressed by Bart's gift – a Leather Buddy multi-function knife –  but Lisa's gift (a book she created, with caricatures of herself and Homer as unicorns) doesn't go over so well. In a half-hearted attempt to make Lisa feel better, Homer hangs the book on the refrigerator, but it quickly becomes a water-soaked glob of paper.

Lisa takes out her frustrations at school, and her parents are called to talk with Principal Skinner. School psychiatrist Dr. Pryor determines Lisa has a development disorder, which can only be resolved by Homer trying to make amends. He does so by deciding to dress as the Safety Salamander and giving safety talks at school. However, a fireworks display during a school assembly causes a fire.

The day before Father's Day, Homer decorates the house for the holiday. After Lisa reveals that Father's Day Eve doesn't exist, and neither does Daddy Claus, Bart, Lisa and Marge go to the Springfield Mall to go shopping for gifts. Bart finds The Leather Buddy, a pocket knife with many different attachments, and buys that for Homer. Lisa decides to make a present for him instead to show him how much he means to her. The next day, the kids give their presents to Homer. Homer loves The Leather Buddy and fantasizes about using it. However, when Lisa gives her gift to Homer, a book she made called Daddy and Me, Homer isn't interested, which disappoints Lisa. Homer then tells Lisa that he'll put the book on the fridge, but it falls down into the ice maker and gets destroyed. When Homer blames the magnet, which Lisa had also made, she runs off crying. Homer tells Marge that he knows how to win women back so he'll win Lisa back.

Meanwhile, Bart – on a dare from the bullies – steals a "Bart Blvd." street sign. This leads to a fiery multi-car pileup when Cletus is unable to find Bart Boulevard. Police cars, fire trucks and ambulances race to the scene but crash into the wreck, making matters worse.
+
Later, Bart is walking down the street when he notices a street sign for Bart Blvd. The bullies then see Bart and tell him to take the sign, as it has his name on it, which Bart decides to do. Meanwhile, Homer tries to make things up with Lisa by going to Springfield Googolplex Theatres to see Princess Rock Star. However, when Homer tries to get Lisa in as a baby to save money, she storms off. At school the next day, Bart shows off the street sign to the bullies. Lisa starts acting up after Martin asks her for a coloring pencil, as all men do is take things without regards to her feelings. After throwing her backpack from Principal Skinner's window, Lisa goes on a rampage and starts knocking things over.

Homer, still dressed in his Safety Salamander costume, runs to the rescue, extricating people who were trapped in their cars just before the pileup explodes in a fireball. Homer gets a rousing reception, and Mayor Quimby is blamed for the bumbling response. Springfield residents pick apart Quimby's administration for other failures, and demand a recall election.
+
Homer and Marge are called in to talk about Lisa's behavior, and Dr. Pryor tells them that Lisa is starting to feel disillusionment with Homer and she might start to hate men if it carries on. He tells Homer that he needs to become a positive role model to Lisa and Skinner suggests that Homer becomes the school's Safety Salamander. Homer's first day on the job doesn't go well after he makes Otto stop the school bus suddenly, causing all the children to hit their mouths on the seats in front of them. At school, Homer gives a safety presentation, but a sign made from fireworks sets fire to the curtains, and the school's auditorium. Lisa becomes more disappointed in Homer, but he tells her that he'll never stop trying to redeem himself.

On Lisa's suggestion, Homer decides to run for mayor, playing on his popularity as the Safety Salamander. However, Marge washes the costume, and it falls apart during a debate forum, disappointing the crowd. Eventually, none of the new candidates gain enough of the vote to oust Mayor Quimby. However, Lisa confides in Homer that she is very proud of him and glad he is her father.
+
Due to Bart stealing the Bart Blvd. sign, Cletus crashes his pickup truck as he doesn't know where he's going. This leads to a massive vehicle pileup which sets ablaze. Homer sees this and runs in as the Safety Salamander to save everyone and becomes a hero to the town. After Homer is presented with an award for his bravery, Mayor Quimby is questioned about the fiascos his administration has been around for and a recall election is called. Many people of Springfield enter the running to become Mayor, including various bad candidates. Lisa suggests that Homer runs for Mayor as the people love him and Homer has his first press conference dressed as the Safety Salamander. Homer becomes a hit with the people and becomes the leader in the polls, despite the negative campaign ads against him. That night, Marge tells Homer that she will wash his Safety Salamander costume as it stunk.

Trivia
The next day, the Mayoral Debate is held. Homer's costume had shrunk in the wash and was starting to fall apart. Despite this, Homer tried to tell everyone his plans as Mayor, but the suit completely fell apart and the townspeople turned on him. The recall election fails to get enough votes for anyone to become Mayor, leaving Mayor Quimby as the incumbent Mayor. Lisa then tells Homer that he tried to make the town a better place, which makes him her hero. The two of them embrace and then dance together.

Production[edit]

The episode was inspired by the 2003 California gubernatorial recall election where after governor Gray Davis was recalled, 135 candidates qualified for the ballot. Meanwhile, the Father's Day plot at the beginning was inspired by episode writer Stephanie Gillis making a poem for her father as a gift, but he wanted her to buy something instead.[1] A Father's Day episode hadn't happened before because Father's Day is in June, which is outside the broadcast season.[2]

The Safety Salamander is based on a mascot in the town where Stephanie Gillis grew up, who was also called the Safety Salamander. The mascot would stop kids running in the streets and go to schools to talk about safety issues.[1]

Reception[edit]

"See Homer Run" was nominated for a 2006 Writers Guild of America award in Animation, but it lost to "Mommie Beerest".[3]

As of March 2024, "See Homer Run" has a 6.8 rating on IMDb.[4]
