- In the flashback and while descending the Devil's Deluge, "I Wanna Rock" by Twisted Sister plays.
- Riot Rivers, and the documentary about it, are based on the theme park Action Park and the documentary about it, Class Action Park. Action Park was known for its poor safety records.
- The Devil's Deluge resemblances Cannonball Loop, an infamous looping water slide that was only opened for brief periods in Action Park's existence.
- Lisa's subconscious jazz garden world is based on the Pixar movie Soul.
- Jimbo asks a fat Bart if he has been to Costco. Costco is the world's largest retailer of choice and prime beef.
- Bart recites a parody of "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost.
