Homer Simpson: Canine Decoder is a Simpsons Comics story that appears in Simpsons Comics #194.

Synopsis

"Homer embarks on a new career as a "dog listener", where he solves dogs' problems. When word gets out about his skill, his services become a big hit among Springfield's dogs and dog owners alike, but he quickly develops burnout and quits. Meanwhile, Lisa sets out to prove that gym class is unfair, but ends up using her intellect to analyze gym and become a success at it. When Homer's quitting as dog listener triggers a doggy revolt in Springfield, Lisa's new gym skills save everyone at school from being attacked by the angry dogs. The canine rebellion is quelled when Santa's Little Helper comes to Homer's rescue and persuades the other dogs to call it off."

Plot

Marge has made dinner for the family, but when Homer goes to sit at the dining table, Santa's Little Helper is sitting in his place. The dog is later sitting on Homer's couch, in the car, and on his bar stool, but after SLH steals his bacon, Homer discovers why the dog tried to take over Homer's role as man of the house: he doesn't like his new food. After Homer switches back to SLH's old food, the dog stops trying to take Homer's place. Meanwhile, Lisa is sad and when Marge asks why, she tells her the truth: she is the worst in gym class. The rumor that Homer can understand dogs spreads, so Mr. Burns asks him to make his dogs active again; they have become lazy. Homer manages to get the dogs to become active and his dogs start chasing Smithers. Lisa has realized that her problem with the gym is not her; it's Ms. Pommelhorst who treats her unfairly, but when she visits her office, she finds out that she was not good at sports as a child and realizes that this is why she is so hard on Lisa.

Homer continues his career as a dog whisperer. Rainer Wolfcastle is his next customer and he finds out that his personal assistant's kids have made his dog nervous. Lisa begins to study how to be good at gym and show Ms. Pommelhorst how good she is, and is soon able to climb to the top of the rope. Homer's next customer is Arnie Pye, whose dog is clingy when he has her in the helicopter. Homer finds out that the dog is afraid of heights. Lisa continues to excel in gym and Homer continues with his new job. Krusty is the next customer. It turns out that Krusty Burgers make his dog sick. A week later, Lisa receives a prize in school: the Sweaty Award for most growth in physical education. Homer is now tired of working with dogs, but while he lies on the couch at home, a hundred dogs visit him and begin to follow him. But when Homer is drunk at Moe's, the dogs realize that their friendship with Homer was not so good, and they start attacking him and his friends. The dogs chase Homer into the school gym, where Lisa and her classmates manage to get the dogs to close their mouths by throwing rings around their mouths. The dogs are angry and will break loose soon, so everyone must find a place to hide from the dogs.

They run from the gym and begin to climb the outer walls on a rope. Pommelhorst has problems climbing up the rope, but Lisa gives her hope so she can handle it. Homer can't climb the rope either, because the dogs have surrounded him. A new dog then enters the herd. It's Santa's Little Helper, who asks the other dogs to stop. Dogs do not want to act like humans; they are now living like kings, thanks to the humans, so if they take over the world they can do whatever they want. The other dogs realize that Santa's Little Helper is right, and they leave Homer and go back to their homes. Homer hugs Santa's Little Helper and thanks him for saving his life. Meanwhile, Smithers calls Mr. Burns to ask how long the dogs will chase him, because they are still chasing him.
