- The episode title is a pun on Lost Horizon and a reference to Verizon Communications.
- The bar Inga-Bar Beerman's is a reference to Swedish director Ingmar Bergman.
- Crocodile Drunkee's is a pun on Crocodile Dundee.
- Principal Skinner crosses the freeway in a similar fashion to the video game Frogger.
- The Allied Peas mascot is a parody of the Jolly Green Giant.
- Bart, Nelson and Milhouse eat grilled Twizzlers.
- Denis Leary is seen wearing a Boston Red Sox baseball cap. In real life, Leary is a big Red Sox fan.
- Bart uses Leary's cell phone to order a New York Yankees hat and Derek Jeter jersey, much to Leary's annoyance (see above).
- Thanks to one of Bart's pranks, Leary appears in the movie adaptation of the children's book Everybody Poops as a constipated gorilla.

Continuity
- When Marge asks Bart how he got a cell phone he tells her that he got it the same way she got him "by accident, on a golf course." This is a reference to the Season 9 episode "Natural Born Kissers".
Goofs
- In one scene, the satellite is on the right of the roof of the Simpsons' house, then several scenes later, it is on the left side.
- Kent Brockman appears with brown hair at The Krusty Klassic Celebrity Pro-Am golf tournament.
