The Great Springfield Gold Rush is a Bart Simpson story first printed in Bart Simpson #68.
Plot
Bart's class is visited by Ranger Todd, who does a puppet show about Sutter's Mill as part of the class's study of the California Gold Rush. Ranger tells about how bad things were going for the gold diggers. After the show Nelson pushes Bart's face into a book and he says that Bart is "prospectin' for knowledge". Bart decides to get revenge on Nelson. So the next day, Bart is with Milhouse and they plan to plant iron pyrite at Lake Springfield, where Nelson usually goes after school with his friends. On the way to the river they encounter Mr. Burns, who intends to bury nuclear waste at McCoy's old farm. Bart and Milhouse plant some iron pyrite before they are chased away by Nelson and his friends. Little does Bart know that the sack with iron pyrite has fallen apart and he begins to spread it all over Springfield. Nelson discovers that they have planned to hide gold in Lake Springfield. It doesn't take long for Moe, Ned and Homer to notice the gold in various locations in Springfield, and the rumor begins to spread. Bart is on his way to watch Nelson find out the truth about the gold, but discovers that all residents of Springfield have begun to dig for gold, so he decides to not tell the truth so no one will gey mad at him, and he hopes it will pass soon. The next day, things get worse: almost all of Springfield is excavated. Bart takes the little bit of iron pyrite he has left from his pocket. Moe and Barney discover this and they ask him where he found it. Bart tells them that he found it at McCoy's old farm, and everyone in Springfield goes to the farm and starts to dig up Mr. Burns' nuclear waste.
