Cultural references
- During the interview at the Adult Education Annex, Homer tells the administrator he can tell the difference between butter and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!, the margarine brand.
- Homer also sings part of the theme song "Without Us" of Family Ties. This sitcom revolved around the generation gap and ideological differences within the Keaton family.
- Lisa asks if Homer plans on using the Socratic method.
- Smithers's marital flashback parodies two movies, both adaptions of stage plays by Tennessee Williams:
- Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, in particular the scene where Brick Pollitt (Paul Newman), using a wooden crutch because he recklessly broke his ankle, continuously drinks and also fights with his wife Maggie the Cat (Elizabeth Taylor) over his lack of sexual interest in her and his homosexual feelings toward his best friend Skipper who has just recently committed suicide.
- A Streetcar Named Desire, in the famous "Stella!" scene where Stanley Kowalski (Marlon Brando) is yelling for his wife Stella (Kim Hunter), sheltering at the upstairs neighbors after Stanley beat Stella, to come back to him.
- In Homer's rant to Marge while in their bedroom, he says the following:
- "Look, Marge, you don't know what it's like. I'm the one out there every day putting his ass on the line. And I'm not out of order! You're out of order. The whole freaking system is out of order. You want the truth? You want the truth?! You can't handle the truth! 'Cause when you reach over and put your hand into a pile of goo that was your best friend's face, you'll know what to do! Forget it, Marge, it's Chinatown,"
- The phrases in bold reference four popular films:
- ...And Justice for All., during Arthur Kirkland's (Al Pacino) speech in the trial, when he says "You're out of order! The whole trial is out of order.".
- A Few Good Men, in the famous "You Can't Handle the Truth!" scene in the courtroom.
- Patton, precisely during George S. Patton's speech in front of the US flag. The original phrase is "When you put your hand into a bunch of goo that a moment before was your best friend's face, you'll know what to do."
- Chinatown, parodying the famous phrase "Forget it Jake, it's Chinatown" towards the end of the film.
- Homer finds the definition of "Wedding" in a Webster's Dictionary.
- When Marge throws everyone out of her house, Apu says, "She's gotta have it!", a reference to the 1986 film She's Gotta Have It.
- The helmets worn by Bart and Milhouse resemble Ultraman.
- Homer says that after one day he was "dirty as a Frenchman". This is one of stereotypes of French people in relation to hygiene.
Trivia
- This is the first episode to show Moe's feelings toward Marge.
- According to Homer, Marge dyes her hair. This was proven to be false in "The Blue and the Gray" where Marge thought her hair was always blue and never realized that she was going gray.
- Students in Homer's class include Carl, Apu, Sideshow Mel, Smithers, Principal Skinner, Mrs. Krabappel, Lionel Hutz, Willy, Otto, Barney and Princess Kashmir.
- Smithers was apparently straight but became attracted by Burns.
