• The episode title is a reference to the novel Sophie's Choice.
• The line "Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead" is from The Wizard of Oz.
• The poem Aunt Gladys starts to read in her will is Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken.
• Duff Gardens is a parody of Busch Gardens & Disneyland.
• Hooray for Everything, the band performing in the second Duff Gardens ad, is a parody of Up with People.
• While Selma and the kids are at Duff Gardens, Marge and Homer watch Yentl, followed by a Troy McClure film, The Erotic Adventures of Hercules.
• The Little Land of Duff ride (which features the "Duff Beer for me, Duff Beer for you" song) is a reference to the It's a Small World ride at Disneyland.
