'''Project Locations''' aims at getting all location articles on the Wiki to a comprehensive state.

==Objectives==
+
== Aims ==
*To expand all article pages
+
This style guide aims to help you write articles on all one-time, mentioned and recurring locations from ''[[The Simpsons]]'', provided they fall within our [[WS:N|notability]] policy.
*Create pages for all locations

*Upload images for all locations

*Update all episode locations appearances

==Manual of Style==
+
== Structure of an article ==
===In-universe===
+
=== Naming ===
All articles pertaining to locations should be written in in-universe prose. This means one should describe the events of ''The Simpsons'' without any references to the real world,<br />such as episode titles, allusions to pop culture, etc. If it is absolutely necessary that one name the source, it goes in [[#Behind the Laughter|Behind the Laughter]], although descriptions of an episode's plot should be reworded to not include the episode's title.
+
If a name for a location is not given in the show, use an appropriate description to name the article and put <code><nowiki>{{conjecture}}</nowiki></code> at the top of the page. All words, except for proper nouns, should be lowercase (i.e. "[[Barney's apartment]]").

===Article name===

If a name for a location is not given in the show, use an appropriate description to name the article and put <nowiki>{{conjecture}}</nowiki> (see [[#Infoboxes and tags|Infoboxes and tags]]) at the top of the page. All words, except for proper nouns, should be lowercase (i.e. "[[Barney's apartment]]").

Some locations' names have changed during the series (for example, "Storytown Village" to "Storytime Village"). In these cases, the article should be renamed to the latest name, using that name throughout the article, and mention the older name in the lead.

The first sentence in an article should define its subject, giving its name and telling what it is. The name, or names, should be bolded [put <nowiki>''' '''</nowiki> around the name(s)].

}}</pre>

:'''Fast-Food Boulevard''', also known as the '''Fast Food District''', is a street in Springfield lined with many fast food restaurants.
+
At the start of each location article should be the location infobox with a picture of the location, with all fields that you can fill in filled.

''If'' the article is made-up of several paragraphs, the lead (opening paragraph) should summarize the article. Most location articles will not need leads as they are short—one sentence or one or two paragraphs will be enough to cover their whole subject. If it is more appropriate to introduce a body section for the location's subject matter, do so. ([[Fast-Food Boulevard]] has a section detailing its destruction, for example.)
+
=== Maintenance templates ===
 +
If the page lacks certain things, then respective templates should be added to the top of the article, or if it pertains to only one section, then at the top of that. The most commonly used are <code><nowiki>{{In-universe}}</nowiki></code>, <code><nowiki>{{Incomplete}}</nowiki></code>, <code><nowiki>{{Cleanup}}</nowiki></code>, <code><nowiki>{{Image needed}}</nowiki></code> and <code><nowiki>{{Engrish}}</nowiki></code>.

===Body===
+
=== The article itself ===
Most location articles will not need a separate body section. If an article has three or more good-sized paragraphs, it warrants a body. Be sure to give the section an appropriate title.
+
The first sentence in an article should define its subject, giving its name and telling what it is. The name, or names, should be bolded [put <code><nowiki>''' '''</nowiki></code> around the name(s)].

'''''Note:''''' A description of a location itself is not enough for an article to be considered comprehensive. A detailing of a location's role in an episode is needed. (Why do the Simpsons go there? What happens to/takes place at the location to drive the story?)
+
The article should be written in-universe view, without mentioning episode names in the text. Episodes should be referenced with the <code><nowiki><ref>"[[Episode Name]]"</ref></nowiki></code> (quotation marks), while comics and other media should be referenced with <code><nowiki><ref>''[[Comic Name]]''</ref></nowiki></code> (Italics). Any articles with references should have
 +
<pre>
 +
== References ==
 +
{{Reflist}}
 +
</pre>
 +
at the bottom of the article.
 +
Episode names are only allowed in the infobox, trivia, behind the laughter, appearances, and references. If you come across an article about a location that is not written in-universe view, then you can help by fixing it, or by adding <code><nowiki>{{In-universe}}</nowiki></code>.

===Behind the Laughter===
+
Note that one-time locations do not need references.
'''''All''''' out-of-universe information goes in this section and must be sourced. The exception to this rule are allusions to pop culture (such as the [[Builders' Barn]] being a parody of The Home Depot or [[Hairy Shearers]] being a pun on [[Harry Shearer]]). References to obscure locations, in an animator's hometown for example, must be sourced, however.

Don't neglect real-world information. It is as important as in-universe in understanding an article's subject.
+
==== Non-canon ====
 +
Non-canon information should follow the above conventions, but be split from canon information. For most locations, this will be through a non-canon section, which should feature <code><nowiki>{{noncanon}}</nowiki></code> or <code><nowiki>{{noncanoncomic}}</nowiki></code> at the start. If, however, the whole article pertains this information, then this template should place at the start of the article.

===Appearances===
+
=== Appearances ===
An article must list all the canon and non-canon appearances of its subject, giving notes if necessary (such as a location being merely mentioned in an episode, but not seen).
+
For a very minor location a list is used, though for a recurring location, the following scroll box is used. Every appearance should be mentioned. For [[anthology episodes]] add which part the location appears in.

An article is not considered comprehensive until it has a proper image. If an article is lacking one, put <nowiki>{{Image Needed}}</nowiki> at the top of its page.
+
=== Navigational templates ===
 +
Various other templates are available to be used for different location groups, and any relevant ones should be added to a location's page. For a list, see [[Wikisimpsons:Navboxes#Locations|Wikisimpsons:Navboxes]]

If a section or an entire article does not follow the regular continuity or timeline of the show, put <nowiki>{{Noncanon}}</nowiki> at the start of the section or article accordingly.
+
=== Categories ===
 +
Every location should be in [[:Category:Locations]], which is automatically added by the infobox. Many other categories are added with the relevant navbox, for example [[:Category:Springfield]] is added when <code><nowiki>{{Springfield}}</nowiki></code> is on the page.

Finally, if a location's Appearances section is not complete, put the <nowiki>{{incomplete}}</nowiki> tag at the start of the section.
+
Besides the automatic categories, the following should be considered:
 +
*Appearance type: Only one of the following should be added to every page: [[:Category:Recurring locations]], [[:Category:One-time locations]] and [[:Category:Mentioned locations]].
 +
*Type: A wide range of categories, most of which need adding by hand. For a list, see [[:Category:Locations]]
 +
*Locations: Many areas (e.g. countries, towns) have navboxes. If not, and the location has a location category, such as [[:Category:Capital City]], add it in.

{| class="wikitable" align="center"
+
There are also other minor categories you may consider. Every relevant category can be found within [[:Category:Locations]].

Style Guide: Locations
Article Style Guide Locations.gif

The following is a style guide on how to create a high quality location page, and is part of our Manual of Style.

Aims[edit]

This style guide aims to help you write articles on all one-time, mentioned and recurring locations from The Simpsons, provided they fall within our notability policy.

Structure of an article[edit]

Naming[edit]

If a name for a location is not given in the show, use an appropriate description to name the article and put {{conjecture}} at the top of the page. All words, except for proper nouns, should be lowercase (i.e. "Barney's apartment").

Some locations' names have changed during the series (for example, "Storytown Village" to "Storytime Village"). In these cases, the article should be renamed to the latest name, using that name throughout the article, and mention the older name in the lead.

Location infobox[edit]

{{Location
|name= Name
|image= Image
|District= District
|Town= Town
|use= Usage
|owner= Owner
|employees= Employees
|first appearance= "[[Episode]]"/''[[Other]]''
}}

At the start of each location article should be the location infobox with a picture of the location, with all fields that you can fill in filled.

Maintenance templates[edit]

If the page lacks certain things, then respective templates should be added to the top of the article, or if it pertains to only one section, then at the top of that. The most commonly used are {{In-universe}}, {{Incomplete}}, {{Cleanup}}, {{Image needed}} and {{Engrish}}.

The article itself[edit]

The first sentence in an article should define its subject, giving its name and telling what it is. The name, or names, should be bolded [put ''' ''' around the name(s)].

The article should be written in-universe view, without mentioning episode names in the text. Episodes should be referenced with the <ref>"[[Episode Name]]"</ref> (quotation marks), while comics and other media should be referenced with <ref>''[[Comic Name]]''</ref> (Italics). Any articles with references should have

== References ==
{{Reflist}}

at the bottom of the article. Episode names are only allowed in the infobox, trivia, behind the laughter, appearances, and references. If you come across an article about a location that is not written in-universe view, then you can help by fixing it, or by adding {{In-universe}}.

Note that one-time locations do not need references.

Non-canon[edit]

Non-canon information should follow the above conventions, but be split from canon information. For most locations, this will be through a non-canon section, which should feature {{noncanon}} or {{noncanoncomic}} at the start. If, however, the whole article pertains this information, then this template should place at the start of the article.

Appearances[edit]

For a very minor location a list is used, though for a recurring location, the following scroll box is used. Every appearance should be mentioned. For anthology episodes add which part the location appears in.

{{scroll|
* {{ul|Good Night}}
*{{ep|Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire}}
*{{THOH|Treehouse of Horror}}
* {{mov}}
*{{ep|Holidays of Future Passed}}
*{{bon|The Amazing Colossal Homer}}
* {{game|The Simpsons: Hit & Run}}
* {{bk|The Simpsons Uncensored Family Album}}
* {{ad|Hard Times}}
* {{spec|FOX's 25th Anniversary Special}}
}}

will produce

Navigational templates[edit]

Various other templates are available to be used for different location groups, and any relevant ones should be added to a location's page. For a list, see Wikisimpsons:Navboxes

Categories[edit]

Every location should be in Category:Locations, which is automatically added by the infobox. Many other categories are added with the relevant navbox, for example Category:Springfield is added when {{Springfield}} is on the page.

Besides the automatic categories, the following should be considered:

There are also other minor categories you may consider. Every relevant category can be found within Category:Locations.

Other[edit]

  • If the article is lacking information, then add {{Location stub}} to the end of the article.
  • Every Location's talk page should have {{Talkheader}} followed by {{Article Style Guide Locations}}.
