History
Before Joe Quimby was mayor, Hans Moleman was the mayor of Springfield. As mayor, Moleman bought the lyrics to the "Springfield Anthem" from a salesman, who also sold the lyrics to other towns.[1]
Sideshow Bob once successfully ran for the position of Mayor after being released from prison. He won the election by using the names of deceased people to vote for him.[2]
In the event of the mayor leaving town, the most learned citizens in Springfield are allowed to take over running the town. The Springfield Mensa division, consisting of Lisa Simpson, Julius Hibbert, Comic Book Guy, Seymour Skinner, Professor Frink, and Lindsey Naegle ran the town as joint mayor for a while. However, they kept making laws without consulting with each other first which resulted in them annoying each other and the townspeople.[3]
At one point, the only other mayoral candidate in town was a man called Petrovichnyamilelenkossarian. He went unelected as he had a long Slavic name.[4]
Marge Simpson once ran for mayor, and won. When Homer and Marge started having relationship trouble due to this, Marge abdicated her position to Joe Quimby again.[5]
