Cultural references

  • The opening sequence where Homer walks into Alfred Hitchcock's silhouette is a parody of Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
  • The first segment, "Clown Without Pity" is an overall spoof of the Twilight Zone episode, Living Doll.
  • Homer sings the Oscar Mayer song only with his name in place of the O-S-C-A-R and the M-A-Y-E-R.
  • "King Homer" is obviously a parody of King Kong.
  • Shirley Temple is seen dancing and singing before Homer eats her.
  • Ape Island is a spoof of Skull Island.
  • When the gas grenade explodes in front of Mr. Burns, he sings "I was strolling through the gas one day", parodying the song "The Fountain in the Park". (The song's first line is "While strolling in the park one day".)
  • The title "Dial Z for Zombies" is a reference to "'Dial M for Murder'".
  • When Bart raises the dead, he's wearing a Michael Jackson record on his head (aptly, it's the Thriller album).
  • When Bart makes the dead raising chants, he utters Wal-mart.
  • Homer kills the following famous zombies: George Washington, Albert Einstein, and William Shakespeare.

Trivia

  • It is the first episode in the series of Treehouse of Horror episodes to have a zombie-related segment. The second is "The Fright to Creep and Scare Harms" in "Treehouse of Horror XIII".
  • In segment 'Clown Without Pity' the Springfield children are dressed up in their Halloween costumes, Bart appears in 'A Clockwork Orange' costume dress as 'Alex DeLarge'
  • This was also the first Halloween episodes to have a couch gag.
  • This is one of several Simpsons episodes which are considered anthology episodes that features mini-stories.
  • In the scene where Bart attempts to resurrect Snowball I, human zombies arise from around them, despite them being in the pet cemetery. Though some citizens might be cheap and classify their recently deceased under pet.
  • Costumes at the Halloween party:
  1. Homer - Julius Caesar
  2. Bart - Alex DeLarge
  3. Lisa - Statue of Liberty
  4. Marge - Cleopatra
  5. Milhouse - Radioactive Man
  6. Nelson - Pirate
  7. Martin - Calliope
  8. Janey - Princess
  9. Lewis - Frankenstein's Monster
  10. Richard - Scratchy
  • At the Beginning, Janey is shown with yellow skin.

Goofs

  • When Homer is escorting the family out of the house to escape the Zombies, he leaves the door wide open, but in the very next shot it is shut.
  • In "Clown Without Pity", when the Krusty doll accidentally knocks the head off of Lisa's Malibu Stacy (her doll), Krusty puts it back on but you don't see a crack where the head came off.
  • In "Dial Z for Zombies", Homer is shooting zombies with the shotgun at the school. When he shoots the first two he just shoots them twice. Every other zombie he shoots requires him to slide the gun. It doesn't when he shoots the first couple of zombies.
  • When Lisa is turned into a snail in Bart's zombie story, she says "awww" but her mouth doesn't open.
