Cultural References

  • The title is taken from the musical On a Clear Day You Can See Forever.
  • The episode's couch gag (which shows the house, Springfield, the continent, the planet, the Milky Way, and the universe, and finally goes back to Homer's body) spoofs the 1977 science education movie Powers of Ten. The gag was first used in The Ziff Who Came to Dinner.
  • Sprawl-Mart is a parody of Wal-Mart, in spite of the sign outside that says it isn't.
  • In one scene, a sign outside Sprawl-Mart says "Don't Watch 60 Minutes This Week," a reference to controversies involving Wal-Mart ending up being covered on 60 Minutes.
  • Songs/music used:
  • The wicker statue of Lisa that Bart builds is a reference to the 1973 film The Wicker Man and its 2006 remake.
  • Jimbo calls the Lisa statue "The Wicker Witch of the West," referencing both The Wicker Man and The Wizard of Oz.
  • Bart's plea to Lisa to "Look in your heart" is a reference to the 1990 Coen Brothers film Miller's Crossing.

Errors

  • Samantha Stanky from Bart's Friend Falls in Love is clearly visible in the field trip however in her episode she was sent to a girls only school.
  • Uter is clearly visible in the field trip to Springfield Glacier; however, in the episode "The PTA Disbands" (the 21st episode from the 6th season) he is left behind on a previous field trip. In the episode "24 Minutes", he is seen stuck in a cobweb in the school air vents. In yet another episode, he is dead.
