Cultural references
- The episode title is a reference to the 1970 film The Great White Hope,
- The Mixed Martial Arts Ultimate Punch, Kick and Choke Championship is a pun on Punt, Pass, and Kick, a football skills competition held annually by the NFL for youths of ages six through fifteen.
- There is an ad on a billboard that says "When a Man Gloves a Woman". This is an allusion to the 1966 song by Percy Sledge called "When a Man Loves a Woman" and also a 1994 film of the same name.
- When the ringmaster announces Marge as "the mom I'd like to fight," it is a wordplay on the acronym MILF.
- The ending might be a spoof of the ending of Dragonball Evolution where Goku and Chichi jump up in the air aiming kicks against each other and the camera freezes. What they say just before is pretty close to what they say in Dragonball Evolution.
- The music that Mr. Burns fights to and that is heard in the end credits is "Boola Boola/When the Saints" performed by the Sing Along Gang. "Boola Boola" is the fight song for Yale University.
- The "UPKCC" is a parody of the "UFC".
- At the PTA meeting, Skinner says that due to the budget cuts, presidents that will no longer be taught about will be James Buchanan, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush. With the exception of George H. W. Bush, these presidents are historically ranked as some of the worst presidents in the United States History. George H. W. Bush is most likely a reference to Season 7 episode "Two Bad Neighbors"

- Barney Gumble is seen at the wrestling stadium, screaming "We've been here for hours!", but then, just seconds later, he's back at Moe's.
