"'The Old Man and the Lisa" is the twenty-first episode of The Simpsons eighth season, first aired by the Fox network on April 20, 1997. In the episode, Mr. Burns becomes bankrupt and asks Lisa to help him become rich again. On the condition that he will lose his evil manners she helps him, and the two start making money recycling cans. After a while Mr. Burns has made enough money to start his own recycling plant. However, his true colors are revealed when Mr. Burns shows that, inside the plant, he makes a multi-purpose edible compound made of squished sea life. He then sells the plant for US$120 million and offers Lisa 10% of his profits, but she declines.

Story Line

Mr Burns is sitting in his office talking to his lawyers. Unknown to him, his lawyers agree with everything he says and he loses all of his money. He lives with Waylon Smithers for a short while, and gets put in the Retirement Castle. Soon, Burns begs for the help of Lisa, She rejects but after patience and irratation, she gives in to help him. Eventually, Burns opens the Little Lisa Recycling Plant. It all goes well until Lisa realises burns is 'recycling' the bottle plastic containers together to clean the sea and sell the meat. Everyone but Lisa in town is apparently brainwashed to recycle until Lisa tries to stop Mr Burns. It ends with Mr Burns selling the Plant for $120 million. He offers 10% to Lisa, she refuses and Homer has four simultaneous heart attacks (thinking she turned down $12000 dollars). She later says that 10% of $120 million wasn't 12000 it was 12 million. Homer suffers another heart attack.

Trivia

  • This is one of the few episodes were Mr Burns becomes poor.
  • This is the only episode were all of Springfield starts to recycle.
  • This is a reference to The Old Man and The Sea.
  • When Mr. Burns goes to The Simpsons' house, asking Homer for his daughter, when Homer asks if he means Maggie, Mr. Burns can be heard mumbling "The baby who shot me" which refers to Who Shot Mr. Burns? (part two)
