The sixteeenth season of The Simpsons began on November 7, 2004 with "Treehouse of Horror XV", and ended on May 15, 2005 with "The Father, the Son and the Holy Guest Star". The season contained twenty-one episodes, all of which are slated to be released on DVD and Blu-ray in December 2013.

In "The Ned Zone," Ned Flanders gains the power of foretelling people's deaths after suffering a head injury, and is shocked to discover that he will be the one to kill Homer. In "In the Belly of the Boss," Maggie is shrunken inside a vitamin capsule in a freak science accident and is swallowed by Mr. Burns. In "Four Beheadings and a Funeral," set in Victorian London, where Master Detective Eliza Simpson and her faithful sidekick, Dr. Bartley, attempt to catch The Muttonchop Murderer, a Jack the Ripper-esque serial killer.

Homer buys Marge a new kitchen, and Marge likes cooking in the new kitchen so much she attends the Ovenfresh Bakeoff.

After Bart gets an 100 on a test without cheating, Marge throws him a party - a boring party. Thinking that none of her kids appreciates her, she finds Nelson in the park and gives him lunch - which leads to Marge 'adopting' him. Meanwhile, Lisa becomes conscious about her weight after she is teased at school.

Marge's old high school friend, the famous reporter Chloe Talbot, comes to Springfield, and Marge becomes jealous when Lisa begins idolizing Chloe.

Moe's Tavern is closed by a health inspector, so Homer takes out a mortgage on his house to open the bar again. As a result, Marge becomes Moe's business partner and turns the bar into a British bar that makes them spend too much time together, which worries Homer.

Homer starts to teach sport players his dances and is placed in charge of the halftime show of the next Super Bowl. Meanwhile, Ned creates a violent film about Bible stories, which makes Marge angry, so she stops him from displaying it.

Homer and Marge don't let Bart go to a rap concert, so he escapes and tells his parents he was kidnapped, but Chief Wiggum believes the kidnapper is Kirk Van Houten and he arrests him.

Lisa becomes fed up with Bart's teasing and takes out a restraining order against him, while Homer takes a job as a Sprawl-Mart greeter.

Selma has a severe hot flash while giving Mr. Burns his driving test. Dr. Hibbert explains (with help from a video starring Robert Wagner) that Selma is experiencing the onset of menopause. Selma, decides she wants a baby rather than grow old alone. Adoption is suggested, but the Springfield orphanage is empty. Lisa suggests adopting a baby girl from China. One problem: the Chinese government only allows married couples to adopt. No problem; Selma writes down a name for her husband - Homer's - and "The Simpsons are going to China!" (with Marge acting as Bart and Lisa's nanny) so Selma and Homer can pick up the baby together.

When Homer applies for life insurance, Marge becomes worried that he may die at any minute and starts to put money away. Homer angry that he cant spend his money spends what Marge has saved on an RV. Marge and Homer stop talking to each other, and Homer invites a convoy of 12 strangers live on his lawn.

After the town enforces new laws, Homer gets arrested for kicking the same beer can five times. He gets put in the new state prison, where he becomes a prison snitch.

Bart and Lisa stumble into Professor Frink's basement, and he gives them a look into their future as teenagers as they get ready for their high school graduation.

A storm hits Springfield, causing the Simpson roof to leak. Unable to keep a roof over his family’s head, a downtrodden Homer seeks companionship at a bar called Knockers. There, he befriends a beer-loving roofer, Ray (guest voice Ray Romano), who agrees to help Homer with the repairs. When Homer’s new best friend never shows up, Marge and Dr. Hibbert conclude that he’s a figment of Homer’s imagination and place Homer in a mental hospital.

Vending machines appear at Springfield Elementary School, and Bart quickly gets hooked on the junk food they dispense. He gains a large amount of weight and has a heart attack. When Bart can't stay on a healthy diet, he is sent to a maximum-security fat camp to kick his junk food habit. Back at home, the family is faced with large bills for Bart's treatment, and needs extra income in order to pay for it. They convert the house into a youth hostel which brings in the money they need, but also attracts an unfriendly and demanding crowd of German tourists.
