Synopsis[edit]

"The Simpson and Flanders families are selected to live in the new Springfield Biosphere."

Plot[edit]

On the news, Kent Brockman reports that Springfield has been chosen to host the next environmental research biosphere. Homer celebrates, thinking that it's a new strip club, until Lisa corrects him. The doorbell then rings and Homer opens the door to find the Flanders family singing Christmas carols to them, despite it being the middle of July. Homer slams the door and the doorbell rings again, this time from a group giving him $10 million. Homer instinctively slams the door again before realizing his mistake.

At the Town Hall, Professor Oddadore shows a short film about the Biosphere to the townspeople and invites families to try out for the chance to enter it. Many people enter the tryouts, including the Simpsons. However, the Simpsons are given a 0% chance of survival within the biosphere. Despite this, the Simpsons are chosen to take part in the experiment, along with the Flanders family, to Homer's disgust. Several days later, the two families are put into the Biosphere.

Later that day, Homer struggles to create a basic shelter whilst the Flanders family construct a two-floor house. Homer and Bart then unsuccessfully go hunting and only bring back bananas on their hunting expeditions. Meanwhile, the Flanders family comes up with full feasts for their family. Despite Ned inviting the Simpsons over, Homer refuses to go. That night, Homer manages to start a fire by rubbing two sticks together, but it burns down the shelter. When they go to sleep, it starts to snow and the family wakes up covered in snow. Due to these conditions, the rest of the family decides to go stay with the Flanders family, leaving Homer to wonder off alone.

Hours later, Homer enters the desert and sees Troy McClure, who tells Homer that he's a hallucination. Troy shows Homer that the Flanders and Simpson families are playing religious charades together and Homer wants to make Ned stop brainwashing his family. The hallucination Troy shows Homer to a waterfall where there's a way out of the Biosphere through a secret tunnel behind it. Homer wonders through the tunnel and finds the door out. Meanwhile, a fire starts at the Flanders cabin. As everyone panics, Homer arrives back at the cabin in time to save everyone. Everyone jumps off the upper floor and onto Homer, except Ned who lands on the ground after Homer gets up. Homer then knocks out Ned as he's panicking and takes everyone through the tunnel to safety. As everyone celebrates Homer saving them, a newspaper saying that the Biosphere has been canned flies into Ned's face.
