Plot[edit]

Homer wonders why Marge and the kids are dressed up. Marge tells Homer that they are going to Ned Flanders' annual Christmas social party, so he should also dress up. Homer tells her that he is staying home, but he changes his mind after Marge says he has a holiday buffet and cookie table again. When Homer dresses up, Marge tells him that he should behave himself, because every year he seems to ruin his party. Homer comes with his family to Ned's party and embarrasses him again by gobbling food, drinking alcohol, playing the piano badly and after Homer drunkenly gives Ned a kiss under the mistletoe, he explodes and throws out Homer. Homer sits at Ned's picnic table and starts to cry about what he did, so he tries but fails again. Ned comes out after a while to apologize for what he did, and gives Homer a gift. Ned tells Homer that he never had a reason to cry out to God for help or give the old forgiveness muscles; being his neighbor has given him stronger beliefs, like that he gets to pass a test of faith every day. Homer opens his gift but is empty, so Ned says he can fill it with something he borrowed but has not returned. Homer hugs Ned and thanks him. Ned tells Homer that he has not done anything. Homer tells Marge that they can keep the riding lawn mower he borrowed. Ned realizes that he forgot about that, and sighs.
