Gift Exchange is a The Simpsons Winter Wingding story first printed in Simpsons Winter Wingding #7.
Synopsis[edit]
- Homer tries to be on his best behavior at Ned Flanders' annual Christmas party. However, all the food and drinks become too tempting for him, and his behavior causes a rift between the two neighbors.
Plot[edit]
Homer is surprised to see the rest of the family all dressed up and wonders if church takes place on Fridays now. Marge tells him that Ned Flanders is having his annual Christmas social, so Homer has to get dressed. Homer is reluctant to go until Marge points out that Ned will have his special holiday buffet table, so Homer quickly goes to get ready. As he gets dressed, Marge tells him to promise to be on his best behavior because Homer always seems to ruin Ned's parties. Homer tells Marge that he'll be on his best behavior and almost leaves without pants.
When the Simpsons arrive at the party, Homer immediately starts eating and drinking. Soon, he is drunk and causing a scene, pretending to be the Ghost of Figgy Pudding, singing parody lyrics to Christmas songs, starting a Christmas limbo, and finally kissing Ned under the mistletoe. Eventually, Ned has had enough of Homer and throws him out, making Homer sad. Outside, Homer sobers up a bit and realizes that he was awful at the party and thinks that he must be the worst neighbor in the world. Ned comes out to Homer and apologizes for throwing him out and hands him a Christmas present. Homer is confused because he ruined Ned's party, but Ned tells him that Homer's antics gave him a reason to cry out to God for help, give the forgiveness muscles a workout, and that being Homer's neighbor has strengthened his beliefs as he has to pass a test of faith every day. Homer opens the gift to find that it's an empty box. Confused by this, Ned tells Homer that he can use the box to return something he borrowed from Ned but never returned, such as his DVR player, cordless drill, or the fondue set. Homer thanks Ned and gives him a hug, then tells Marge that Ned let him keep the riding lawn mower since that can't fit in the box. Ned says that he forgot about that.
