The puppet show goes over when James Marshall first found gold at the Sutter's Mill before other people found out about it and flocked to the location. However, the prospectors ended up going broke and ended up with disease, starvation, exposure, and death. Mrs. Krabappel tells Ranger Todd that she expected a story about the colorful old prospectors they see in movies, but Todd tells her that they weren't colorful. After the show, Nelson pushes Bart's head into the history book, which leads to Bart wanting to get back at Nelson.

Bart takes a bag of fool's gold to the Springfield Lake, where the bullies hang out. Meanwhile, Mr. Burns and Waylon Smithers arrive at the McCoy Farm and decide to bury nuclear waste there illegally.
