Synopsis[edit]
- After becoming obsessed with the horror comic Harvest of Fear, Bart is surprised to find the final page of one of the stories is missing. He goes to the comic's writer Mort Hopper to find out what happened in the end.
Plot[edit]
Bart and Milhouse are at Snake's yard sale, where they read through the comics he's selling. Bart finds a copy of Harvest of Fear #3. He asks Snake about it, and Snake says that it's an imitation of the more successful comics published by EC Comics. Bart decides to buy the comic, and as he and Milhouse are leaving, Hans Moleman runs in asking how all his furniture and belongings got out onto the lawn, so Snake flees. That night, Bart decides to read the first story in the comic.
Joey and Timmy try to stop their friend Johnny from smashing open a turtle. Johnny says that he thought there might be something inside the turtle, like a harmonica or a calendar. Johnny gets mad at his friends for complaining about his actions, so he goes home. When Johnny gets home, he finds the lights are all off. His mother tells him to sit down and drink his lemonade. Johnny's mother then asks if he's comfortable in his skin and whether he thinks his skin could be more comfortable. She then asks if Johnny has ever noticed how pleasant potholders are to the touch and how nice their quilted surfaces feel. Johnny gets confused by the questions, and Johnny's sister calls him a dumb old boy. Johnny asks why they are acting so strangely, and Johnny's mother says that the family has all had their skin quilted, just like potholders, and they want him to be quilted too. Johnny starts to panic and wants to leave, but realizes that his lemonade was drugged. Johnny's sister turns the lights on, and his family approaches him to quilt his skin.
After Bart finishes the story, he can't sleep and goes downstairs for breakfast the next morning. Bart then imagines Marge and Lisa talking about quilts and making quilt puns, scaring him. Bart runs to his treehouse and decides to continue reading the comic because he has to know the worst.
A couple of boys go to Mr. Jippers' comic store, only to find that all his comics had been bought out that morning. They then go to Mr. Whilliker's shop, only to find that all the comics were bought out just ten minutes earlier. The boys ask Officer Carey if he knew the person who bought them all, and he identifies the person as Mr. Stokes, a newcomer to the town who bought the old Grandville Place. One of the kids decides not to go there because it's too scary, leaving the other one to go alone. The kid knocks on the door, and Mr. Stokes answers it before inviting him inside. Mr. Stokes leads the kid into a room where he says the comics are. However, what is in the room causes the kid to scream.
Bart is surprised to find that the final page is missing, so he goes to The Android's Dungeon to ask Comic Book Guy about the comic. Comic Book Guy reveals that the comic's writer and artist, Mort Hopper, went around cutting the last page out of every copy of Harvest of Fear #3 and refuses to tell anybody what happens on the final page. Comic Book Guy also tells Bart that the writer lives just outside Springfield. Bart goes to pay Mort a visit at his house. Mort agrees to tell Bart what happens under the threat of being harassed by the kid. He invites Bart inside, where he tells him the final page just had a normal monster and was nothing special. When Bart asks why he cut the page out, Mort says that it's because he knew it would drive brats like Bart crazy, and they would come crawling to him to find out how it ends. When Bart asks why he wanted that, Mort seemingly transforms into a monster and attacks him. However, the outcome is unknown as the last page is cut out, showing a page of advertisements instead.
