- Homer sings the end of the theme song to Family Ties while talking to an administrator at the annex center.
- Smithers's marriage flashback parodies two plays: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and A Streetcar Named Desire, both written by Tennessee Williams.
- In Homer's rant to Marge while in their bedroom, he says this:
- "Look Marge, you don't know what it's like. I'm the one out there every day putting his ass on the line. And I'm not out of order! You're out of order. The whole freaking system is out of order. You want the truth? You want the truth?! You can't handle the truth! 'Cause when you reach over and put your hand into a pile of goo that was your best friend's face, you'll know what to do! All of his lines are from four popular films, which are ...And Justice for All (1979), A Few Good Men (1992), Patton (1970), and Chinatown (1974).
Trivia
- This is the first episode to show Moe's feelings toward Marge.
- According to Homer, Marge dyes her hair. This was proven to be false in "The Blue and the Gray" where Marge thought her hair was always blue and never realized that she was going gray.
- Students in Homer's class include Carl, Apu, Sideshow Mel, Smithers, Principal Skinner, Mrs. Krabappel, Lionel Hutz, Willy, Otto, Barney Princess Kashmir.
- Smithers was apparently straight but became attracted by Burns.
