A Cold Day in Springfield is a The Simpsons Winter Wingding story first printed in Simpsons Winter Wingding #9.

Synopsis

"Springfield is hit by the biggest snowstorm in history and becomes buried under 20 feet of snow. See how the citizens thrive and survive by building an intricate system of tunnels to help them go about their daily lives."

Plot

It has snowed twenty feet in Springfield after an extreme climate change due to a problem at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant caused by Homer. Bart is bored inside the house and gets a call from Milhouse, who wants him to come over. Bart decides to make a snow tunnel to Milhouse. In the Van Houten House, Luann tells Bart and Milhouse that she will give them money if they can get to the Kwik-E-Mart and do some shopping. They decide to accept the mission and dig a tunnel to the store. Bart and Milhouse start to get the help of other children by making several tunnels around the town. The tunnels are becoming popular and the kids start taking a toll on $5. When Joe Quimby finds out about the tunnels after they make a tunnel to City Hall's emergency bunker, he forces the Springfield Police to take over the tunnels. The kids decide to get revenge by digging a tunnel to the power plant, where Bart makes the town warmer after reading Homer's operator's manual, and the tunnels melt. Springfield gets flooded and the children take $5 per mile to row around the residents instead.
