Blog:Episode framegrabs or promo images in the infobox

Wikisimpsons - The Simpsons Wiki
Revision as of 07:42, April 13, 2012 by Randomno (talk | contribs) (Comments)

Many users have been putting the promotional images for episodes in the infobox, while some are putting episode framegrabs in the infobox. So I propose that we have a vote on whether promo images or episode framegrabs should be in the infobox. ~ Phinbart (talkcontribs) 07:49, 8 April 2012 (EDT)

Vote

Episode framegrabs

  1. I think promo images should always be in a "Promotional images" section at the end of the episode page. ~ Phinbart (talkcontribs) 08:39, 8 April 2012 (EDT)
  2. Framegrabs should be used in the infobox. As Cook879 said, not all episodes are provided with promos. The episode pages should look uniform - not some with promos, some with framegrabs. --Effluvium 09:38, 8 April 2012 (EDT)
  3. Ditto. --WebkinzMania 10:47, 8 April 2012 (EDT)
  4. Cake walk. fit the infobox better in my opinion and look better, promos in a different section would look nice as well however. Josegiraffio 17:36, 8 April 2012 (EDT)
  5. I agree with Phinbart. There should be a section dedicated to promos and just any framegrab from that episode. --Fred (Talk Contribs. Editcount) 20:26, 8 April 2012 (EDT)
  6. I think promo's should not be used for the infobox because: 1) Promos are typically portrait, not landscaped (taller than wider) which will push the infobox down farther, keeping the text compressed until the infobox ends (compressed used loosely, the text actually is not squished together, it just cannot use all the space); and 2) Many promos do not show anything that the episode is about, promos of most recent seasons typically will only have a guest star or two and maybe a Simpson (ex. the promo for "Any Given Sundance" does not show what the episode is about, and framegrabs will). Promo images

  1. I always prefer promos as they are official images released by FOX. Some users might be looking for promos, and not know you can find them when you scroll down (alternately, with the promos they release today, they might not realise there's a promo for the episode at all :P). Anyway, I'm sticking with promos. | SimpsonsFR.pngSimpsonsFA.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFD.pngSimpsonsFO.pngSimpsonsFM.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFO.png | Talk | Contributions | Edit count | 10:27, 8 April 2012 (EDT)
  2. Promo images when available, even if the infobox image ends up being duplicated further down the page in a gallery of promotional images. As Random pointed out, the promo images are official, and therefore most likely to be associated by the general public with the episode. Also, the promo images are likely to be of good quality. Since the infobox image is pretty much the first thing a visitor notices when arriving at an episode page, it makes sense to have the episode put its best foot forward, as it were. On the flip side: If promo images aren't available, or if they're of "meh" quality, then use a good-quality framegrab for the infobox. -- Mythigator 12:08, 8 April 2012 (EDT)
  3. Convinced. --Wk (talk) 06:05, 10 April 2012 (EDT)
  4. FatHomerTalk 06:11, 10 April 2012 (EDT)
  5. Promo images go in the infobox where available. The Solar Dragon 06:16, 10 April 2012 (EDT)

  • I think it depends on the episode - not all episodes have promos.--Cook879 08:39, 8 April 2012 (EDT)
    • Looks like I'm getting outnumbered. | SimpsonsFR.pngSimpsonsFA.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFD.pngSimpsonsFO.pngSimpsonsFM.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFO.png | Talk | Contributions | Edit count | 10:49, 8 April 2012 (EDT)
      • Yeah, Mythigator, I always try to remove the logo if we put a framegrab in the infobox. | SimpsonsFR.pngSimpsonsFA.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFD.pngSimpsonsFO.pngSimpsonsFM.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFO.png | Talk | Contributions | Edit count | 12:37, 8 April 2012 (EDT)
        • Also, I think we should have this policy:
        • If an episode has a promotional image, it should have the promo in the infobox. If an episode has multiple promos, the one best suited to the episode title or plot should be put in there (e.g. the promo image feturing Apu for "Exit Through the Kwik-E-Mart", as Apu owns the Kwik-E-Mart). If none of the promos are suitable for the infobox, put a good framegrab (episode screenshot) in the infobox. If an episode doesn't have any promos at all, just put a good framegrab in then infobox.

          • Nicely summarized. -- Mythigator 17:13, 8 April 2012 (EDT)
            • Images in the infobox are 250px. Images in galleries are a lot smaller, 120px. Viewers will probably want to see the promo easily, not have to click on the image to get a full-sized version. And even if you did have a gallery of other promos, you would still get a good image in the infobox. | SimpsonsFR.pngSimpsonsFA.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFD.pngSimpsonsFO.pngSimpsonsFM.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFO.png | Talk | Contributions | Edit count | 10:35, 9 April 2012 (EDT)
              • DaRanger, yes, some promos are not suitable for the episode, like The D'oh-cial Network, so we used a framegrab. But we can still use promos for some episodes. | SimpsonsFR.pngSimpsonsFA.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFD.pngSimpsonsFO.pngSimpsonsFM.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFO.png | Talk | Contributions | Edit count | 18:04, 10 April 2012 (EDT)
                • I think that the wiki should use one or the other (promos or framegrabs), otherwise the episodes pages will look like there is no clear formatting for images (which is why we're here). Using just one for every episode will look more professional as opposed to what it is now. DaRanger (Talk) 16:18, 11 April 2012 (EDT)
  • The only problem I can think with this is that some episodes don't have promos, so people will get confused with what's a promo and what isn't. | SimpsonsFR.pngSimpsonsFA.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFD.pngSimpsonsFO.pngSimpsonsFM.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFO.png | Talk | Contributions | Edit count | 16:31, 11 April 2012 (EDT)
    • So should we go ahead with episode framegrabs then? ~ Phinbart (talkcontribs) 05:58, 13 April 2012 (EDT)
      • Should we also decide the size of the image in the infobox? FatHomerTalk 06:30, 13 April 2012 (EDT)
        • It's always been 250px I think. ~ Phinbart (talkcontribs) 06:35, 13 April 2012 (EDT)
          • Not yet. the vote is 6-5, not enough difference to make a change. The Solar Dragon 06:42, 13 April 2012 (EDT)
