Synopsis
Temparance Barrow lives on the island of Nantucket and is married with a loveless, selfish and uncaring whaler named Captain Morticai, who hardly makes a catch for the family. One day, while washing the laundry at the back of her home, she meets Cyrus Manly, a man who is new on the island and the two start a relationship without the knowledge of Captain Morticai. The captain soon finds out about the affair and corners Cyrus at a cliff, impaling him with his harpoon and sending him down the cliff and hooked onto a whale, just when Temparence arrives at the scene. Captain Morticai gloats at his victory but the rope from the harpoon, the harpoon impaled onto the whale and Cyrus, is caught around Morticai's leg and pulls him off the cliff with the whale and Cyrus. Temparance watches from the cliff as the two men and the whale go below the depths.
Influence
Temparance Barrow was based on Marge and the character of Captain Morticai was based on Homer. Originally, Captain Morticai was depicted as a caring loving and successful whaler, but she finds out how slobbish and uncaring Homer is, she rewrote the character of Captain Morticai to resemble Homer as he was: a selfish slob.
Marge based Cyrus Manly on Ned Flanders after he gave Marge a free Stud Detector, which he brought extra.
When Marge's book was released, Otto noticed that "Temparance" changes to "Marge" for three paragraphs.
