Cultural references
- During the interview at the Adult Education Annex, Homer tells the administrator he can tell the difference between butter and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!, the margarine brand.
- Homer also sings part of the theme song "Without Us" of Family Ties. This sitcom revolved around the generation gap and ideological differences within the Keaton family.
- Lisa asks if Homer plans on using the Socratic method.
- Smithers's marital flashback parodies two movies: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and A Streetcar Named Desire, both adaptions of stage plays by Tennessee Williams.
- In Homer's rant to Marge while in their bedroom, he says this:
- "Look, Marge, you don't know what it's like. I'm the one out there every day putting his ass on the line. And I'm not out of order! You're out of order. The whole freaking system is out of order. Trivia
- This is the first episode to show Moe's feelings toward Marge.
- According to Homer, Marge dyes her hair. This was proven to be false in "The Blue and the Gray" where Marge thought her hair was always blue and never realized that she was going gray.
- Students in Homer's class include Carl, Apu, Sideshow Mel, Smithers, Principal Skinner, Mrs. Krabappel, Lionel Hutz, Willy, Otto, Barney and Princess Kashmir.
- Smithers was apparently straight but became attracted by Burns.
