Synopsis
Plot
Homer, Bart, Kirk, and Milhouse are on the Santiago together, captained by Horatio McCallister. Homer is fishing whilst Kirk is throwing up overboard. Kirk thanks Homer for coming and tells him that his counselor recommended a fishing trip as a father/son bonding activity and says that having Homer and Bart there makes it easier for him. However, Milhouse got bored quickly due to not a lot happening and no fish being caught. Whilst Bart plays a fishing video game, Homer manages to catch something, which turns out to be Kirk's glasses which he lost when he was throwing up. When Homer thinks Kirk insulted him by implying he couldn't catch a fish, Homer becomes more determined to do so, which impresses Bart.
Unhappy with not being able to catch anything, Homer makes Captain McCallister sail into deeper waters, despite Kirk and Milhouse already feeling sick enough on calmer seas. Eventually, Homer manages to catch a large marlin which Homer struggles to reel in. Homer tells Captain McCallister to go full speed ahead in an attempt to tire the marlin out so he could reel it in. However, the fish manages to break the fishing rod, leaving Homer to hold the line itself to bring it in. Homer, Bart, Kirk, and Milhouse work together to keep the fish hooked and Homer gets ready to jab the fish with a poker to kill it. However, he can't bring himself to do so as he feels like he's been through a lot with this fish already. Homer then decides to go back to port with the fish and decide whether to keep him or let him go then.
As they sail back to port, a group of sharks appear around the ship, wanting the marlin. The group tries to get the marlin onto the boat but he's too heavy, so they fight off the sharks instead. In order to save the fish, Homer cuts the line and lets him go free. After getting home, Marge makes Homer a big bowl of nachos to cheer him up whilst he and Bart watch the news. Kent Brockman reports from the Springfield Squidport that Ned Flanders caught and killed the marlin after it didn't put up much of a fight, which upsets Homer.
