Bart of Darkness is the first episode of Season 6. It aired on September 4, 1994. The episode was written by Dan McGrath and directed by Jim Reardon. The episode is an obvious parody of Alfred Hitchcock's movie Rear Window. After breaking his leg, Bart spends the Summer at his bedroom window, spying on the neighbors with a telescope. Bart finds the view boring until he sees Ned Flanders murdering his wife.

Plot

At the start of summer vacation, Otto, the bus driver, stops by driving the Pool Mobile. Bart, Lisa, and the rest of the neighborhood kids enjoy the pool until Otto tells them that he is leaving and never coming back. Upon hearing this (and being unable to "go where the pool goes"), Bart and Lisa beg Homer with irritating logic until he gives in and lets them have a pool. After one mistaken try, the Simpsons build a proper pool and suddenly, Bart and Lisa are the most popular kids in the neighborhood. All the kids at Springfield Elementary, as well as kids they don't know, show up at the Simpson house every day to swim. However, when Bart is dared to jump from his treehouse into the pool, he gets distracted by Nelson ("your epidermis is showing!") and falls to break his leg. Bart is forced to stay indoors with a huge cast on his leg while Lisa enjoys her newfound popularity and the other kids continue swimming in their pool. However, Bart becomes insane after being denied time around his friends and in the sun. To suppress Bart's sudden paranoia, Lisa gives Bart her telescope for something to do. He first comes to the conclusion that everyone in his neighborhood is a bore and not interesting to spy on, until he hears a female scream and spots Ned Flanders burying something in his backyard. After seeing a few more signs that lead Bart to believe that Ned has killed his wife, Maude, Bart convinces Lisa to sneak into Flanders's house and snoop around for more evidence. However, Bart then uses his telescope to see Flanders coming into his house with an axe. Certain that Ned intends to kill Lisa, Bart fumbles around the house in his wheelchair, trying to get into the neighbor's home, while Lisa is chased into the attic, unbeknownst to Flanders, who was simply trying to put his axe away where it couldn't hurt anyone. He is dumbfounded when he sees Bart, who has accumulated a great deal of junk on his cast due to his bumbling, who demands answers and why he killed his wife. Flanders explains to the Simpsons and the police that Maude was actually at Bible camp (his explanation for saying "she's with God now," and that he didn't kill his wife, he killed her favorite plant. Maude forgives him and the Simpsons return to their normal lives.
