• The episode title and plot are based on the Disney film 101 Dalmatians; Burns' plan to kill the puppies and turn them into clothing references Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians, who wants to do the same thing.
• The scene showing Santa's Little Helper and She's The Fastest eating spaghetti and kissing is a reference to Lady and the Tramp.
• The clerk at the pet store performs a mind-meld on Santa's Little Helper, a reference to the Vulcan mind-meld from Star Trek.
• Terminator: Santa's Little Helper's escape from the car (as well as the scene's music) parody the T-1000 from Terminator 2.
