Synopsis[edit]
- "Mr. Burns explores alternative sources of energy for the people of Springfield by tapping in the geothermal power from a nearby volcano; however, when the new source of fuel proves unstable, the town charter demands that the town offer a human sacrifice to appease the volcano gods and restore order.""
Plot[edit]
Waylon Smithers dismisses Homer after another meltdown at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. Homer then goes to Mr. Burns to explain things. In Mr. Burns' office, Smithers is crying and says that Burns has left them for another power plant. Homer convinces Smithers to go to Burns and tell him how he feels. He goes to the new power plant, where Burns tells Smithers that he is building a backup plant which, unlike the older one, gets its energy from Springfield's extinct volcano, and he will be coming back soon. Smithers is happy and leaves Burns in his new power plant, but before he walks away he plays with the dashboard.
A few hours later, the volcano erupts and the city's residents start to flee, even the Simpsons. When they run away, they discover that the whole town is surrounded by magma. Mayor Quimby tells the residents that he has a solution: according to the town charter, they should throw the most innocent person into the volcano to appease the angry gods. Lisa objects, but Quimby and the rest of the town decide that they should have a competition to find the city's stupidest people to throw into the volcano. Krusty is the host, and the eleven selected contestants must go through several tests. Test number 17 is to get a kite down from a tree. After all the tests, it turns out to be a three-way tie between Cletus, Homer and Ralph, so they decide that all three should be thrown into the volcano. Lisa then gets Marge to distract the inhabitants with cookies while she rescues Cletus, Homer and Ralph. She takes them to the plant, where she asks them to fix the power plant that caused the outbreak. Homer hesitates, but Lisa says that he can only make things better and it can't get any worse. They meet Hank, who helps them destroy the power plant, which stops the volcano erupting and causes the magma to solidify. Cletus, Bart and Ralph are acclaimed as heroes and Lisa does not understand why they are not celebrating her. Quimby then explains that the city is always celebrating the stupidest people, because they always have to take care of everything in times of crisis. Years later, we see that the stupidest people continue to take care of crises in the city.
