Barney was born on April 20 1960, sharing his birthday with Hitler. His father, Arnie Gumble, died in a 1979 parade float accident along with Sheldon Skinner, Iggy Wiggum, Etch Westgrin, and Griff McDonald, all of whom had served in [[Abraham Simpson|Abe Simpson]]'s [[The Flying Hellfish|WWII squad]]. Barney once had a near-death experience in which he expects to be reunited with "my loved ones, my dad, and that plant I never watered," perhaps implying that he did not get along with his father, though this line could also be interpreted as Barney reuniting with his "loved ones: my dad and that plant I never watered."

As a teenager, Barney showed much potential. He was Harvard-bound until Homer introduced him to beer on the night before they had to take the SATs. He took to drinking after his high-school sweetheart Chloe Talbot left Springfield to become a successful TV reporter. He used to have blond hair, but later dyed it brown.

Barb used to be a javelin thrower, until her breasts became too big to be an athlete any more.

When Ned Flanders came across a large amount of money, he donated it to St. Giles Orphanage, which Barb ran. This donation led to Costas Becker going after Ned.

Barb became smitten with Ned and asked him out on a date to the Springfield Winter Market, which Ned accepted. After their date, they went back to Barb's house and Barb invited Ned in. As they made out, Ned noticed that Barb had multiple pictures of her with Sideshow Mel, then realized that she was married to him.
