History[edit]
The Simpson family watched an episode where Snake was executed in the electric chair. Homer, disappointed, lamented, "How come they only do crucifixions during sweeps?" However, he quickly perked up when immediately after the execution he received a phone call telling him that the hair transplant for which he had been waiting was now available.
Behind the Laughter[edit]
- The program is a parody of America's Funniest Home Videos.
- The program also references two of Ed McMahon's trademarks from The Tonight Show:
- Just before Snake is brought into the studio, McMahon says, "Heeeeere's Snake!", similar to his "Heeeeeere's Johnny!" line from The Tonight Show.
- McMahon yells, "Hi-yoooooo!" when Snake dies. On The Tonight Show, McMahon gave the same yell when Johnny Carson delivered the punchlines for his jokes.
- Homer's lament refers to sweeps periods, which occur four times per television season and are when viewers record their viewing habits in diaries to provide data for the Nielsen ratings. In the television broadcast industry, it is a common practice during sweeps periods for programs to resolve storylines and/or air sensational material to attract more viewers and therefore receive higher ratings.
