The Three Stages of Teaching is a Bart Simpson comic story first printed in Bart Simpson #21.
Synopsis[edit]
- Miss Hoover lets Lisa take over the role of teacher when she complains about how she teaches.
With only twenty minutes before the school bell rings, Miss Hoover gives Lisa a stack of TV Guide issues to hand out to the class to read. Lisa complains about this, telling Miss Hoover that teaching doesn't seem to excite her very much, and asks if she doesn't like opening young minds to the world of knowledge. Miss Hoover takes this as Lisa challenging her and tells Lisa that she can teach the class instead before she walks out.
Stage one is idealism. First, Lisa tries to get the class to write poetry about their favorite animals. However, this goes poorly, with one student rhyming "mutt" with "butt" and Ralph getting his poem stuck in his ear. Lisa throws out the poetry idea and moves on to stage two, exhaustion, as she has them do an art project instead. Lisa tries to get the class to do papier-mâché, but they end up covering themselves in paper and pretending to be mummies. This leads Lisa into stage three, surrender. Miss Hoover comes back into the class to see how Lisa is doing and finds Ralph reading to the whole class from a TV Guide. She's surprised that Lisa has hit stage three already.
