Cultural references[edit]
- The episode featured several references to war films:
- Lifted directly from the 1970 film Patton: The music, several lines of dialogue, and the scene where Bart slaps one of his soldiers for "being a disgrace." Fox owned the rights to Patton, so it was no problem to use the soundtrack.[1]
- The marching sequence is a nod to Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket from 1986.
- The Longest Day from 1962 is also referenced.[2]
- Star Wars - Bart refers to the Star Wars Trilogy as being one of the few exceptions to "there are no good wars."
- When Bart and his army defeat Nelson and the kids all celebrate, a boy wearing a sailor cap kisses Lisa in a similar fashion to the sailor in the famous photograph "V-J Day in Times Square." However, in contrast to the image of joy which was presented in the 1945 photograph, Lisa afterwards throws the boy off her, slaps him and angrily tells him "Ew! Knock it off."

- This is the first episode where Bart wears his "lucky red hat", but this time, is red with a white visor. However, in "The Call of the Simpsons", the cap is totally red.
- This is the first episode where Bart is seen crying. Homer then proceeds to dry his tears with a hairdryer. The second time was in the episode "Bart Gets an "F"" from Season 2.
- During their first "fight," Nelson hits Bart twelve times in the face before he knocks Bart out.
- The password to Herman's shop is "Let me in, you idiot!"
- The Kwik-E-Mart is spelled as "Quick-E-Mart" in this episode, according to Herman's model of the town. The Kwik-E-Mart changed its name and made its first actual appearance in "The Telltale Head".
- This episode is the first episode to have the Springfield Retirement Home.
- Bart's list of wars which were exempt from his "no good wars" message, which was made before future American wars such as the Gulf War, were:
- The American Revolution
- World War II
- The Star Wars Trilogy
- This is the first episode in the series to show blood.
- This is the second episode to have Bart's name in the title. The first is "Bart the Genius".
- In the script for this episode, Grampa mentions that he is seventy six, and that Homer and Grampa had Bart's hair when they were young.
Goofs[edit]
- When Bart's army is attacking Nelson, there are a lot more kids attacking Nelson than there were training with Bart.
- At the start when the bully takes the cupcakes, you can see that, after he has started eating them, there are 4 left in the box. Just before he shuts the lid to drop it, you can just see the tops of 6 cupcakes.
The incorrectly colored yellow weasel is on the right
- When the three bullies walk in to harass Bart, just before the crowd disperses the yellow weasel is shown in one brief shot with brown rather than yellow skin.
- When Bart declares war on Nelson, Herman uses the declaration from the Franco-Prussian war and puts "Bart" in place of "Otto Von Bismarck". Bismarck didn't declare the Franco-Prussian War, Napoleon III of France did.
- When Grandpa Simpson is typewriting a letter in his room, the words he's spelling out loud don't match his fingers hitting the keys.
- When Bart enters the tree house after being beaten up, he puts his hat on a peg behind him. In some later shots at an angle you can just see the hat behind him. In the shots from directly in front of Bart, the hat is not on the peg.
- Lisa mistakenly calls Miss Hoover, her teacher, "Mrs. Hoover". This mistake is also present in the script.
- When Herman shouts to Bart about his arm, the words he's speaking don't match his mouth's movements.
- When Bart comes into the house after being rolled down from the school in a trash can, the room in which Marge and Homer are in are positioned wrong in the house. Also, there are two hallways after the room with the couch.
