In the Swim is a Simpsons Comics story first printed in Simpsons Comics #134.
Synopsis
- Mr. Burns organizes for Homer to swim the Springfield Channel to prove that it's safe, despite his illegal dumping of nuclear waste in the water. The swim is made even more difficult when an orca who bears a grudge against Homer won't let him swim in peace. Meanwhile, Lisa dresses as a carrot to advertise Seth and Munchie's Organic Vegetable Patch.
Plot
The families of Springfield Nuclear Power Plant employees are aboard Mr. Burns' yacht, the Gone Fission, for a family fun cruise on the Springfield Channel. However, Lisa isn't happy about it because the cruise is being used to distract people from Burns and Smithers dumping nuclear waste into the water. Lisa asks Burns if he's worried about karma, but he isn't. However, his jacket gets caught on one of the nuclear barrels as it goes overboard, taking Burns with it. Smithers jumps off the deck to rescue his boss, but hits Carl who is looking out of a porthole below. Lenny eats a can of spinach and jumps in to rescue his friend, but gets stomach cramps. Homer then falls in and everyone holds onto him as he's so fat, he doesn't sink.
At dinner that evening, Homer finishes recounting the story of how he saved everyone and Barney. When Bart asks how he saved Barney, Barney tells them that he got his head stuck in the pickled egg jar at Moe's and would have drowned if Homer didn't tell him to drink the brine. Lisa tells Homer that the only reason he saved everyone is because he's fat and that he should eat some vegetables. Homer says that vegetables have never saved anyone's life and begins a vote to ban vegetables from the house, which passes with Homer, Bart, and Barney voting for it. Lisa becomes upset as Marge starts throwing away the vegetables as she believes in democracy.
At the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant the next day, Homer is invited to Mr. Burns' office where he thinks he's going to get a reward for saving Burns. Instead, Burns tells Homer that he wants him to swim the Springfield Channel to prove that it's safe to swim in, and Homer's buoyancy will stop him from sinking. Meanwhile, at Springfield Elementary School, Lisa's lunch is disappointing as she only has cheese and a boiled egg made to resemble vegetables. She asks Lunchlady Dora if there are any vegetables on the menu, but she's told there aren't any. After Lisa leaves school, she finds Gil wearing a carrot costume. Gil reveals that he's advertising for Seth and Munchie's Organic Vegetable Patch, but he's fired by the pair after they find that he's been stealing vegetables from them. Lisa then offers to become their new mascot as they would pay her in fruits and vegetables.
At the Springfield Channel, Homer gets ready to swim, despite being worn out just from climbing to the podium. Meanwhile, Jesse Grass and his friends are releasing a whale from Captain McCallister's Discount Aquarium and Seafood Shack into the channel. Homer starts swimming and is quickly confronted by the orca. Thirty years earlier, Homer tormented this orca at Captain McCallister's Discount Aquarium, with Captain McCallister telling him that an orca never forgets an insult. In the present, the orca starts attacking Homer and tells him that he'll be back. Meanwhile, Lisa starts advertising for the Vegetable Patch. However, nobody is interested in her pitches. Two other mascots, including Rib-It, approach Lisa and tell her that she's on their side of the street. They then dump Lisa into a garbage can.
At the Springfield Channel, Homer is still swimming while keeping an eye out for the orca. Homer throws a fish into the orca's mouth, which he thinks will appease the creature, but it attacks him again anyway. Meanwhile, Lisa's costume is now battered and she's too hot. It starts raining, which soaks the costume and makes it too heavy for her. The mascots then come back to confront her again. Back at the Springfield Channel, Homer sees the finish line. However, the orca approaches him again and refuses to let him finish. Back on the streets of Springfield, Lisa has finally had enough of the mascots and takes her costume off before pushing them all over. However, her costume rolls down a hill and into the Springfield Channel. The orca sees it and eats it, thinking it's an actual carrot. Homer then crosses the finish line successfully. As he insults the whale to the crowd, the orca is revealed to have grown legs due to the nuclear waste in the water and chases Homer onto land.
At dinner that evening, the family has vegetables again because a giant carrot saved Homer's life. However, the family voted to have Lisa keep wearing the carrot costume, which annoys her as she wants to take it off.
