- While playing poker against Mr. Burns Homer sings a portion of the song "Wannabe" in his head.
- When Smithers asks Homer what he does, Homer tells him that he does "pretty much the same job as George" from The Jetsons.
- Smithers safety report contains a "witty foreword by Dennis Miller".
- Polly Holliday, who played the character Flo from the TV sitcom Alice, is stuck in Mr. Burns' trap door shut.
- Mr. Burns tells Bart that the paintball fight was "more fun than the Falklands War [he] caused".
- When the employees are all fighting, one of them holds up a conch shell and shouts that he has the right to speak, a reference to the character "Piggy" from the novel Lord of the Flies. The other employees then chase him, causing him to squeal.
- When Smithers comes back to the plant, only to find it in disarray, Mr. Burns is seen sitting on the floor in his office muttering "The horror. The horror. The wonderful, wonderful horror." This is a reference to and a parody of a similar that is said at the end of the movie Apocalypse Now.
