Location Information

The World Trade Center (WTC) was a complex of seven buildings in New York City. All seven of the original buildings were constructed and completed over the course of 21 years (1966-1987). Two of the buildings on-site had 110 floors each and were nearly identical with a few differences. One World Trade Center (the "North Tower") was known for having a 360 foot (109.728 meter) TV antenna on the center of the roof that was installed in 1979 (It replaced a shorter off-center antenna from 1972). It also featured an indoor restaurant which opened for business in 1976 and occupied floors 106 & 107. Two World Trade Center (the "South Tower") had an outdoor observation deck on the roof as well as an indoor one on floor 107; both were open for public use in 1975.

A new complex of buildings along with a memorial and a museum have all been under construction since 2002 when cleanup was finished. Just like the buildings of the former site, there are different completion dates for each structure.

History

Barney once illegally parked Homer's car at the complex, where it received an enormous number of parking tickets and had one of its wheels clamped. Homer traveled to New York to retrieve the car and stubbornly drove it away with the clamp still on the wheel.[1]

The towers were later destroyed in the terrorist attacks, also known as 9/11, on September 11, 2001. Despite this, Homer still tried to order a collectible plate from a 1980s TV Guide where the mailing address was One World Trade Center.[2]

Behind the Laughter

  • One World Trade Center was one of the complex's iconic "Twin Towers", the northern one, the one with the antenna on top. On 9/11, it was the first of the towers to be hit and the second to collapse. Rebuilding is currently underway at the site. It is considered the world's deadliest air disaster. Perpetrator al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, was killed by American forces on May 1, 2011. Over 3,000 people died, including all hijackers.
